  • G400 benchs on current PCs?

Does anyone have benchmarks on some current processor. Like a p3-667 or 750?

I'd like to see how fast they are on that class of processor.

    Thanks,

I could have done better than that 8 months ago! Hint, you'll see a big improvement even at 900mHz!

Check out my rant above, I saw no difference going from 800 to 933Mhz using a G400MAX. Im a bit disappointed, but well ready for the next round of video cards

Hi cpld005, I was looking at your setup and it's similar to what I am just about to get.

Do you have to use extra cooling for that cpu at 933MHz? I was going to get a 800 but it's quite a bit more than the 700 but not much faster.

Is your net card the one that comes with the mobo or a standalone PCI card? I think that ASUS has an optional 3COM card on that board. I wonder if it's better than the what Intel uses (82562 or something). I have an extra Intel EEPro 100+ in a computer, so I probably won't need a new network card.

I suspect you have no problems with your g400.

I would rather get the MicroATX version of the board but I haven't seen any reviews of it yet.

As far as cooling goes I have a GOlden Orb, the CPU is totally at stock voltage and runs 29C at full load (much cooler then the 600@800 did. I have an add in network Adapter, Don't want to use onboard since it's software based and will suck CPU cycles. The system has been rock stable, and after upgrading to WinME my scores in all tests improved slightly. Might be the new DirextX 7.1A that ships with ME, but other then the G400MAX (not that it's bad mind you, just it's getting a bit long in the tooth) my system is awesome. I would totally go with a PIII 700 and o/c to 933. I can probably go for higher but i'll keep it as it is for a week to "burn it in".

cpld005: Your post has gotten me thinking and excited. I looked at the database over at overclockers.com and it's all good posts about the pIII-700 at 933. I would like a pIII-800 but it's too expensive compared to the Athlon 800, so I feel like I'd get screwed. But if I get the 700 at 933, then it's the other way around.

My preference would be for the microATX but if onboard-lan is mandatory than I won't get it. No way I am using or paying for soft-lan. I have everything else I need in my second computer: 256MB pc133 2-2-2, Intel Ethernet, video, live!, couple of 20GB and all the periphs.

It seems like a gamble that my cpu may or may not overclock properly, but at the same time I have been investing a lot of $$ in mining companies, so it's a small gamble.

I think I'll do it! As soon as I can find more info on that microATX board and a certain transaction goes through to see how much I have left.

            Thanks!

I have a G400 vanilla that I run at JUST under max speeds. My former processor was a C366@490. The only game I ever play is Q3A, which I run at 1024x768x16 with medium geometry, low/medium textures, hq sound, a3d off, lightmap, and bilinear (did I forget anything?). With the C490, I got 47.5 fps, which seemed pretty good considering the processor. I always heard how CPU dependant the G400 was, so I've been anxious to upgrade. I just did that (a P3 700 which I'm currently running @ 933). I'm actually a little dissapointed. I now run @ 49.9 fps. I think I've obviously hit the fillrate limit. I'm sure at the lower resolutions I'd recognize a huge increase, but I like the higher resolutions. On the plus side, I can now run A3D with only a .1 fps loss (before I think it was around 7 fps). I do think it has helped smooth out some of the really active fights though.

I don't want to give up my G400 picture (I don't really game that much), so if I want any better, I'll have to either spend a lot of money & waiting on a G800 (I'm sure too much money for the amount I play games), or work on some super cooling for the G400 (MAYBE get another fps or two).

BTW, as far as the question on the P3 700, they are great (but make sure you get a CBO stepping). MOST people are getting 933 or better without too much work. You can get them at Onvia.com for around $240/free freight, use pointclick to get there for 10% off, and you may be able to find a $25 off onvia coupon. All said & done, 900+ for less than $200. This is the retail version, and I'm using mine with the stock heat sink. I can do windows at 952, but do eventually get an error in prime95. I don't want to up the voltage until I have better cooling, but might get upper 900s after that (would love 1001 for the status thing, but not getting my hopes up).

              Good luck!

I got extremely lucky my processor costed only $199.00 at a computer show here in Los Angeles, I can hit 960Mhz with standard voltage on the CPU and it's rock stable.

Oh and by the way whoever said i815E mobo's suck must not know how to tweak them cause this mobo is much much faster in both memory performace and 3D then my overclocked Asus P3B-F ever was, and alot less flakey on the AGP. I could not run AGP 2X ont he P3B-F due to the overclocked AGP bus, on this board I can get AGP 4X since the bus is not overclocked and I see no artifacts at all.
