Thanks cpld005 and everyone else. I sent an email to the company that I buy stuff from usually. They haven't replied yet but I really can't wait.

I only have two PCI cards, a SB Live! and an Intel EtherExpress Pro+.

By the way, I have a question about the CUSL2 board, do you have the option to boot using PXE in the bios?

I am in the process of building a cluster of diskless computers as well and I wonder if I'll be able to use this computer for testing.

        Dr. Matrox:
        1. I have no knowledge of the p3v4x mobo, as I have an Abit BE6-II, but if they are like abit, you should be able to go to their website & view compatibility. Look under the bios updates, as they often list what new processor compatability is added with each update.

        2. There IS a slot version, but the issue may simply be finding one. I've been wanting to do a CPU upgrade for a couple of months, but none of the places that had them at reasonable prices had the slot version in stock. It ended up being cheaper to just get a flip chip, with a $10 slotket.

        3. CBO is the second stepping version of the coppermine die. They make minor changes with each stepping, that usually makes them more stable at faster speeds. A third stepping (I think CCO) is due next month, but it usually takes several months for stock on the old steppings to be depleted to be sure you are getting the latest one. There is a point of diminishing return, because you might reach a point where your agp bus &/or memory max out before your cpu.

        4. Can't help you there, sorry.

          Salmonius,
If your talking about booting from a NIC card I beleive the option is there, but will have to check it out when I get home and post here a bit later on.

            Salmonius,
You'd be better off trying to find some1 that has got a P3-700 working in your mobo before buying.

The manufacturer of my motherboard claimed it would work with a P3-700E if I upgraded the BIOS to the version they supplied me. I did, and it didn't work at all.

I'm waiting the delivery of my new mobo now, but it makes the upgrade more expensive than I planned

Hi Raptor, I am getting a new mobo along with the CPU, so there won't be any problems.

I have just fired another email to the company. They are not well setup for buying over the web, but they have by FAR the best prices in Canada. I buy from them all the time even though they are located in Vancouver and I am currently in Halifax (about 5000KM apart). Here is an example: $380CND for 128MB pc800 samsung RDRAM. I'll never buy RDRAM, but it just shows.

I think that this is the right time to buy a 700MHz CPU because they are pretty much at the bottom of the ladder now and the 933 won't be that cheap for several more months.

It's a risk, but if it doesn't work it's still pretty fast, and when I buy a better one, I'll recycle it in my second computer.

As I was writting this, I got my quote at last.

Remember the intel cpu isn't the only one that overclocks

From what I can tell from all the hardware review sites, and from people posting in forums, with 650 duron you can hit 900-950. With an athlon (thunderbird) 800 I'd be surprised if you couldn't get 950, and I'd expect to get 1 ghz.

Done! My money order is in the mail (they are not well setup yet for internet shopping, but the price is too good so I put up). I should have it early in 2 weeks, or maybe Friday next week. It's a long wait still, but it's been about 18 months that I have been waiting for something to my satisfaction.

The Athlon is an awesome processor. That's what I use at work on my linux machine. The only reason I got Intel is I didn't want to get VIA motherboard. I wouldn't say that VIA makes bad chipsets, but I think that mobo manufacturers don't put the same effort in those boards as they do with intel mobos. Case in point, the CUSL2 has a bunch of other features like 7 USB ports and the drive with all the connectors and display. I find that the Athlon doesn't get the respect it diservses. It makes me sad but I am not the father of the poor children and I don't really want to pay and get something that will disappoint me. Plus I don't feel bad about my support for AMD because they make a better product for cheaper. I have convinced a lot of people at work to at least try the Athlon.

In this specific case, a pIII-700 likely to work at 933MHz for $335CND has got to be the exact best deal available at the moment and even for another two or three months. Quite a long time in CPU time.

Salmonius, which store is that? It is obvious you have done a lot of shopping around, so you may save me a bit of hassle as I live just outside of Vancouver.

Hi ScooterX, there is not one place in Canada that you can get such good prices. I have searched everywhere on the internet.

The place is www.atic.ca. It's good to compare with the second best place www.onvia.com/canada too just in case.

I got the pIII-700 retail for $335. It's almost as good as the best prices on pricewatch! Maybe it is in fact, because they are all OEM on pricewatch.

Last time I checked, the g400 OEM SH 32MB was $170, the DH $210, and the voodoo3 3000 OEM $130.
