    Best Athlon motherboard for g400

    I have an AMD K6-2 350 with a G400. I want to upgrade my computer to a 700mhz Athlon. Most people here know that socket 7 motherboards SUCK when combined with a G400, I certainly have had a rough time trying to get my G400 to work satisfactorily. What I would like to know is:

    -Are there any motherboards I should avoid for my Athlon upgrade?
    -Are there any motherboards that are recommended for my Athlon G400 combination?

    I would appreciate any help given, Thank You...

      My Abit KA7 has been great, as long as you are getting a Slot A CPU...I don't know how/if it works with a Thunderbird or not.

      If you get a VIA base motherboard, just get the latest 4-in-1 drivers from www.viatech.com and you'll be fine.

        Boards to avoid: Anything based on the KX133. Particularly the Epox 7KXA. I just spent all weekend trying to get my G400 to place nice on it... It still doesn't.

        If you want to go with an older Slot Athlon, then the MSI K7Pro is indeed one of the best available.
        If you want to go Socket Thunderbird, then I too have heard lots of good things about the A7V. Apparently VIA made enough bug fixes and improvements to the KT133 chipset over the KX133 that it is now a reasonably stable platform.

        If however you want something that is garaunteed to be stable, and if you feel like waiting a while to upgrade, something based on the AMD760 chipset is the way to go. Admittedly, you may be waiting for quite a while if you decide to go that route though.

        So, I would say either go with an older athlon coupled with a K7Pro, or a Socket Thunderbird and something KT133 based.

        Be forewarned though, VIA has a less than stellar reputation and the final verdict on the KT133 vs the KX133 has yet to be decided. It may end up that the KT133 is just as bad.

          Thanks a lot guys... I've since been doing some looking around, and indeed the Asus A7V seems like the best option. I've also decided to get a 600Mhz Duron until I can muster some cash to get a high end Athlon...

            Part of it depends on whether you are going socket or slot Athlon. IMO, just like the socket 7 boards avoid the cheap ones such as FIC or Gigabyte. Asus's A7V for the socket A Athlon's is getting very good reviews and there are serveral ppl here with them. Look in the General hardware forum. I personally have the Asus board on order and am just waiting for it to come in.

              Hello, I still have a Matrox G400 (2x AGP).

              Now I need another motherboard which will work with an Athlon XP2400.

              My current motherboard, Elitegroup K7s5a (also the pro version), have problems with WOL. (wake on lan). Also the Elitegroup L7S7A2 makes (great boot) Problems with the G400.

              Can anyone recommend a good motherboard, which will working well with the G400 (2xAGP), an Athlon XP2400, and which also does wake on lan?

              Could be an older one, because I can buy it on ebay.

                I've had a lot of luck with putting a G200 Marvel (that I didn't want to discard) in an MSI KT3 Ultra2. The board is great. With the later bios it runs most 333 FSB Athlons.

                I found the board on Ebay with additional Raid support (which I have not used yet) and a new XP3000/333 processor. The CPU was tough to find in the UK but I got it for less than some quite dubious ones sell on ebay uk.

                You really want the Ultra2 edition as the earlier Ultra is not rated for 333FSB; though oddly some have managed to do 333 on an Ultra.

                The other board I considered was an Asus A7V333 which is broadly equivalent to the MSI one. These also appear in various varients, some with Raid.

                I was also recommended to consider the MSI 745 Ultra which uses a SIS 745 chipset which is rumoured to be better at video capture etc than the VIA chipsets of that era.
