  • TV Tuner w/ G400

I am interested in hooking up a G400/G400MAX to a TV Tuner card(Rogers Cable). The TV Tuner I am interested in is the Hauppauge WinTV-Theater w/remote. Do any of you have this card?

On CNet(different model, but same chipset I believe... http://www.computers.com/product/review/0,212,0-19-434366,00.html?tag=st.co.pdtl.txt.r ev and http://www.computers.com/product/item/0,31,0-19-434366,00.html?st.co.sbcat1042.txt.pdtl ), I have heard some people grumbling about poor picture quality with their systems. When checking further into some of their reports, they are using older systems and (really) old graphics cards. Would this affect users with new graphics cards(say, the G400? )
Also, do any of you have the TV Tuner add-on for the G200 or the G400? How is it?

I have the Rainbow Runner G Series which has a TV tuner. Works fine for me, (an' my g400) except for the fact that you'll be restricted to older driver revisions until Matrox gets their damn head on straight.

PurpleHaze I use the 5.25 drivers with a G200-RRG it's working just fine. With a G400 it might not work.

The picture quality on my TV is much better, the RRG is just a gadget nothing more. If you want quality you must spend more money.

              I have the Happauge WinTV/Radio.

The TV quality is as good as if not better than the TV, the latest drivers are Wk2000 and the Win2000 interface,(which works under win9*), is very nice.

Screen capture is up to 1600x1200 and looks very good.

You can also record TV or Camcorder input to an *.avi file, which also works very well.

I had no problems installing this card alongside my G400MAX.

              GO FOR IT...

                Hi whiplash,

So, you managed to get the Hauppauge WinTV card working with your G400? Lucky you! I spent a week talking to Hauppauge tech support, trying to get their card working with my G400 (system hang every time), but eventually I had to return the (Hauppuage) card. I have seen others mention similar problems. I was using the latest G400 BIOS & drivers, latest WinTV drivers, etc., etc., but absolutely nothing worked. Did you have to do anything special to get this combination working?

Err. I've installed Hauppage WinTV... And how on earth have you gotten the 5.25 drivers to work with the RR-G??? Err, sounds fishy...

Um, The quality of the RR-G tv tuner is going to be the same quality as the WinTV. (What on earth are you talking about 'its just a gadget' ? ) NO tuner card will look the same quality on a monitor as they will on a TV - Monitors have DIFFERENT PHOSPORS, LOWER BRIGHTNESS and a MUCH HIGHER RESOLUTION - that all has to be *compensated for* when you're running ANY tv tuner.

The RR-G uses the same Philips tuning unit and Zoran video chip as the Hauppage. What sort of crack are you smoking?

(*phz. still sorta in a bad mood. i go crash on your couch steev)

Hauppage Theater works ok with G400. Simple plug and play. TV + screencapture provides good quality. +/- 5% frame loss when capturing video on PII-450/U2W-LVD HD. Remote control is nice but (for now) limited to HP apps. Would be nice if it could be used with DVD players (anyone has solution for this?).

                      Diddl,

Plug & Play for you, Plug & Nightmare for me (and several other frustrated G400 users)! If the combined resources of Matrox & Hauppauge tech support can't figure this out, who can? (No jokes about tech support, please! :-)

                      My config:

                      450MHz Pentium III
Chaintech 6BTM mainboard, Award BIOS 4.51
AGP slot: G400 32MB DH (IRQ 11) with latest (5.25) drivers
                      Slot 1: SB Live! Value (IRQ 5) with Live!Ware 2.0 (+ 2.1 upgrade) drivers
                      Slot 2: Diamond SupraExpress 53i V PRO (IRQ 11)
Slot 3: Haupppauge WinTV Radio PCI card (IRQ 9)

Hang every time the Hauppauge drivers (yes, I tried the latest ones) are installed... :-(

I would personally prefer RR-G, being a Matrox fan, and because it would make sense since I'm already using G400 which has connectors for it.

But I've noticed that some people experienced problems with Abit boards, RR-G, and a _power supply_! How's that? I'm running Abit BX6-rev2.0 and the power supply is one of the best, 300W ATX. I really don't like the idea of ending up with an RR-G dead in the water because it would not be compatible with my power supply

And the solution for this (replacing the power supply with a cheap model) doesn't look bright to me either.

Anyone here, running RR-G + G200/400 on an Abit BX6-rev2.0 with a high quality power supply?

                        Michael

P.S. Usually the better quality components the better - but this power supply thing seems to be just the opposite. Beats me.

RR-G is really power sensitive? eef, I'm interested in this... What happens, does it just not get the current it needs or something?

Yeah, I seem to remember reading something about RR-Gs and power supplies. The RR-G requires a lot of high quality (clean) power, I can only assume. So if your 200W power supply is already stressed, get a new one before getting a RRG.
