OK, so what am I doing wrong....

I opened the 6.01 beta setup file with winzip 6.0, clicked on the g400icd.dl_ file, hit extract, and put it in a temporary place. It still had a _ at the end, so I just renamed it. Backed up the old copy, & put this in the system directory. Q3A can't intialize the ogl driver (or something to that effect). I tried doing it with the 5.50 drivers... same thing. I then used winzip to see how big that file in the 5.50 setup file (I'm currently using 5.50) would be when extracting and it said it was only 6% compressed, and the expanded size would be around 850k (give or take). My backed up copy is around 1.8MB, so obviously winzip (8.0)is not properly extracting the file.

So I tried the manual expand command Randy gave (at a dos prompt), but Windows did not know what to do. Is that a built in command in Win2k & not win98, or am I just missing something very obvious?

    Please help!

If you open it with Winzip, if you've done it correctly winzip will ask you for the last letter. If not, it will just drop it out there.

As for the command line thinger, you may need to hunt up the expand.exe (or is it expand.com) file, it's on the install CD for windows, not all installations put it in your windows folder.

        Gurm,
Thanks... actually figured out what was wrong, came back here to report:

My problem was I was opening up the packaged .exe file with winzip, and expecting to click on the files within it then choosing extract to fully extract them. What I had to do to do it correctly was open the file in Winzip like I had done, but then double click the file, which opened another instance of winzip where I got the option to tell it the last letter. I guess that means they are compressed files within a compressed file.

For anyone interested, I played with several icds. The one from the 6.01 beta still had my shadow problems, and was actually about 3-4 fps slower. Nothing gained there. I went back to the oldest I could find (5.13), and found it was actuall a few tenths of a second faster than the one I was using, didn't have the shadow texture problems, but had several other visual problems & occasional hicups. For now, I've settled on the 5.41 icd. It's only a tenth or two slower than the 5.50 I was using, doesn't have the shadow problems, and the only added anomaly I've noticed is the brown background (like when loading levels) turns white, but actuall gameplay is fine.

I am a bit discouraged that they can't seem to get everything fixed. You would by now they would be able to get the drivers both fast AND glitch free. I was quite surprised to see that the latest drivers are almost 10% slower than the fastest of the bunch, and was still plagued with anomolies. I'm glad it's so easy to change the icd though. Thanks for the tip!

you can fix the shadow problem by setting Opengl to optimize for accuracy in the MTSTUtil

...or you can Optimize for Speed to see if that gets you the speed of the older ICD.
