  • New G400MAX user- need tweak advice

Hi, I'm a new user to this board and matrox (defected from my voodoo3000).I haven't got it yet (next week) but was wondering if anyone could give me a low-down on getting the most from it. I've got the 6.01 beta drivers, turboGL 1.3,and G400 tweak 1.2beta.I was wondering which other files I should get (bios,BEos,PD version) and also how it o/c's. I'm going to fit extra memory heatsinks and wondering what I could go to.Also, what are the recommended bios settings? Cheers.

Hello and welcome, goof (eh, eh).

Since nobody answered you yet, I personally will going to try to help you.

I´m a G200 user, but I know some stuff about the G400. I know that the AGP Aperture Size (in the BIOS) should be set to 256 Mb. If you have problems with that, change it to another value. Regarding drivers and BIOSes, 6.01 is working fine to my knowledge (be sure to uninstall any Matrox previous drivers with Matrox´s own uninstall utility that you can find in their site) and you should upgrade the card´s bios to the latest version, too.

In what concerns overclocking, it´s universal, I mean, fine if you have extra cooling. Matrox cards usually overclock very nicely also because of the memory quality.

    Hope this gets you started.

      cheers Alec.
If anyone else out there knows more about the G400MAX specifically could they advise which tweak utility to use (MGA's or Matrox's) and which version of PowerDesk works best with these drivers. Also, the BIOS update says it is for G400 and G200 tho I suppose it's also for the MAX? I'd also appreciate a rough idea of max performance bios settings, for example, where 256 AGP aperture is often recommended it isn't usually the fastest. Thanks again.

        If you use 6.01 then:

        1. Matrox Tweak Utility doesn't work with v6

        2. Aperture@256 is required only if you use turboGL.

        3. Leave turboGL and use the ICD (at least that's what I extracted from several postings).

        4. If you want to use MGATweak search for it in the MGA Tools forum for the low-down.

        Hope this helps

powerstrip is probably the best utility to use. without extra cooling the max clock and memory speeds that can be reached are 165/220, i do not know how much further you can get with extra cooling although i will try this in the future, hopefully i can reack 200 clock speed, hey with the extra cooling post a message to say how you do good luck

I've owned three MAXs. I always use Powerstrip. It's fast and I don't care about every little possible tweak. I ususally oc a bit below what I find to be stable. My three MAXs oc'd to 158/210, 180/240 and 176/235. Never used any additional cooling on either the memory or the processor.

So, i'm using drivers v6.01 and I'll use the MGA tweak utility (forget about turbo GL).What about Power Desk - I saw there was a new version6 beta of that as well. Will it work okay with these drivers?

v6.01 is one package, drivers and Power Desk.
