D3D Problems w/ G400

I've been trying to walk a guy through the building of a PC over at the Anandtech Forums. He finally has it together, but his G400 is crashing in any D3D app, 3dmark and the Matrox Tech Demo, to be precise.

His specs, from what I remember:
Athlon T-bird 700
Asus K7v
128mb ram
G400
SBLive
Win98SE

He has installed the VIA 4in1's and has the latest drivers from Matrox and the latest motherboard bios.

Any suggestions??

Oops. He claims he's not sharing and irq's.

also suggest to force AGP1x via the reg-patches and see if that helps ...

He said things were fine until he flashed the bios, installed the new G400 drivers, the VIA 4in1's, and Directx 7a (I hope it was 7 ).

I have him checking the AGP Aperture setting as well.

G400 is on IRQ11 and only sharing with the "holder". He did install Directx 7.

Did he flash his MoBo or G400 BIOS ?

Also, what OS is he running ?

He flashed the motherboard bios.

I'm think the same thing. He might need to update his G400 bios. I have him looking up which G400 bios he has.

Is PD6.01(driver he's running) compatible with old the bios'?

He's running win98SE

I'll post this again since I got an error message last time.
Did he make a backup of the orginal bios?
Did he note down the orginal working settings.
If he didn't make a backup of the orginal bios can he download the orginal?

Would installing Directx before the video card drivers cause this kind of a problem?

I'm thinking YES.

So, I told him to reinstall Directx as soon as he gets home from work.

Have you installed VIA IRQ mini router?

In my system the mini router crashed immediately my system with the newer versions of my mainboard bios!

He supposedly has all the VIA 4in1's installed. I've never had them do anything but help my systems.

It turns out he has an old G400 bios. I told him to update that and see if that helps.

Thats what I was thinking whilst reading this. My preferred order is OS, mobo drivers, DX7a, G400, sound.
