  • Is my G400 dying or is it something else??

    Hi,

over the past month i have had crashes of my g400MAX. They only occur when i play HL-CS, but when i then quit cs, windows shows the same distortion. Reboot solves it.
Is it my G400 that's going down or could it be something else??

screenshot: (600k,sorry for the size, but when i try to make it smaller it's not viewable anymore)

running this config since JAN 1999 (except for the g400 ofcourse, i have it since aug 1999 via Matrox pre-order)

most interesting pattern! I remember seeing some thing along those lines in the past & turned out to be poorly seated cpu.

It also looks like a typical failure that appears when tweaking a G400 Max to hard using some of the misc. options in MGATweak.
Or your G400 could be running to hot.

        Michel,
Check to make sure the fan on your max is actually working, also, what is your case temp?

Looks like heat is my first guess.

I haven't o/c my max (never have). i'll check the temps and fan when i get home.

but if it's overheating, an reboot shouldn't solve the problem should it? It only happened to me during hl-cs play and after reboot i continued to play, so shouldn't that be impossible if heat where the problem?

            but i'll check it anyway..

That is typical of chip or memory overheating:

1 - Your case temperature is too high. Your G400 suffers.
2 - Your G400 fan may me disconnected or dead.
3 - If you´re overclocking, lower the values.

When this happens, a reboot solves the artifacts. This only happens when you play HL because it´s the only demanding 3D game that you play for long periods of time, am I right?
The graphics chip is taken to its speed and temperatures limits in 3D games. In Windows this doesn´t happen.

Another example of a 3D game capable of crashing / freezing your computer is Unreal Tournament....it's the ultimate o/c stability test. Some settings works fine in other apps/games but when you play UT or Unreal or another demanding 3D game you stress your PC to the MAX and the weakest link in the chain will snap.It dosent have 2 b your G400.

                  Ok just checked:

1 case temp is currently 37 degrees celcius (room temp 20 )
                  2 fan is working ok
                  3 i'm not overclocking

i'll leave temp monitor on to see what the temp is when it happens (monitor records highest/lowest values).

it could be the temp, because my big tower is a bit full (2 hd's, 3 cd-drives).. now why don't they sell super-big-towers
