I've done clustering using two 2940 UW's 4 SCSI HDDs and a bloody long SCSI cable - and it worked!!!

"There is no sensible argument for running Adv Server"

      1. Extra Administrative Tools in Start Menu.
      2. More Networking Programs than Pro. (Which can be added to Pro by using the Adminpack.MSI in SP1.
      3. Takes up around 100+m more space than Pro.
      4. Learning the differences between different version of the OS'S.

Obviously I'm not gonna convince you guys and your not gonna convince me. The only other analogy I can come up with is if I had Microsoft Office 2000 & Office 2000 Premium. I would install Premium because it has the most features and I have the space to handle it. This thread is going nowhere fast and I guess you guys don't like to mess around with your OS'S and like to take business's word that this OS does this or that program does that. I like to actually find out the differences for myself. Rip apart the program and actually see the differences between the 2. In fact just run a windiff between AS & Pro and you'll see that they are almost exactly the same.

Either a post has dropped off the list or I need new glasses. Dyre What problems are you having? It's okay saying you getting massive problems but problems with what? Installing it getting SMP to work? Installing the Matrox drivers?

          DosFreak,

The point isn't that it's bad to run SERVER, it's that ADVANCED SERVER is foolish, needless overkill for any system you can build right now today. Period. End of story. It has NO more tools than Server (unless you count clustering which you can't do because you don't have the hardware for it), takes up more memory and hard drive space than server, and runs slower than server.

          End of story.

            Dyre,

Are you choosing MPS, Standard, ACPI Uni/Multi?

Mabye your system is not ACPI compliant so try going with MPS Uni.

              >1. Extra Administrative Tools in Start Menu.

?? You mean you like as many icons in your start menu as possible? You can install the admin pack on any w2k computer, and have all those icons Of course a lot of them won't do anything by the time you disable all those extra services to get server running as fast as pro.

While you guys where arguing over what the OS is for, ive been trying to get it to work and since we are back on topic, ill fill you in on whats happening.

Tried leting it Auto detect. No good. Install either fails (locks hard during setup) or is unusable(boots into windows, works untill i try to DO anything, like open Exporer or something- locks hard)

Tried using ACPI - motherboard doesnt support it. install crashes imediatly.

Tried using MPS - no good

Tried using Standard PC. Looked to work, but no multiproccessor support...

                Installed 98. Runs fine.

Tired the above with Win2k Pro. Same results.

Ive just flashed the bios, and am going to try re-installing again.

The Motherboard was in working order before it was shipped to me. Also, ive tried both CPU's in my other BX system (the one im typing from) and they worked fine...

Quiet Confused. BTW, i never get to the point where i can install any drivers.

BTW, can we keep the post on topic. Yes I dont NEED Advanced Server, but there is no reason why it SHOULDNT work... besides, i want to play with this system. What fun is that if i install Pro... Nothing to play with(well not as much as AS)

Still a lack of details. Whats your system spec, Irq's etc. Have you checked whether theres an Bios upgrade for your motherboard?
Are the cpu's of the same stepping? Are you overclocking? Is the G400 sharing with another device? Have you tried more conserative memory timings?

I have it, it works (W2k Advanced server etc.)
Had the same problems you have. It has to do with the computer type (mips/standard etc.) but I don't remember which one I chose.
I'll check it out this evening (Israel time) and post tomorrow.
                    It works quite fine though.

                      Pit:
                      No Other devices installed.
Never worked long enough to check IRQ's
                      No O'cin (yet)

                      UPDATE:
Right now im POSTING from the above box. Setup with "Standard PC" (1 cpu only) and a 3Dfx Banshee. Also, i decided to chech the OCIng ablility and this cpu is running at 600mHz fine right now....

                      Very strange indead.
BTW, if i use the G400 (using 5.14 drivers) the system locks hard about 30 seconds after Windows loads. No BSOD's, just hard lock.

Im going to try to install again with MPS MultiProccessor with the Banshee in....
