I'm jealous of John Carmack's skills.

I don't think John Carmack thinks he's God. I think other people think he's God, which coincides with ph0rk's theory. He's a coder who's achieved a substantial cult celebrity status. He is accessible, so, as ph0rk pointed out, his opinions can be found all over the place. He has also been a friend to Matrox and was extremely impressed by the G800.

if it was not for JC openGL would not be as popular as it is now. Why is that important? Because Microsoft came out with an API called DirectX and in the begging had plans to charge companies license fees for using it. But the competion of openGL was there because of JC (Quake1, Quake2 engines). So Microsoft had to give DirectX out for free.

If JC did not make openGL popular with game engines (quake1 was the first polygon FPS, many tried and failed before him) then games today could be more expansive if they had to pay fees to use DirectX.

Carmack wants 64-bit colour percision built into video cards when doing calculations. Help the round off errors so 16-bit/32-bit color will look much better.

GHTA, Microsoft saw OGL market share and decided that they wanted it. So then they came out with DX. Altho they may have hinted at charging companies for it originally, that would have nenver flown. Look at the market today tho, 90% of games are DX not OGL. Please don't get me wrong, I appreciate OGL big time, it's such a rich enviroment to build with and much richer than DX. But, it's just not in the majority of the games today.

paulcs - What did Carmack say about the G800? Do you have a link?

          Thanks,

I give JC credit for what he has done:
            1. Linux support, what can you say, someone had to do it.
            2. Making the Qx games modifiable. There is no doubt that the Qx mods are way better then the original game and he makes sure that game sturcture helps out the modmakers.
            3. Great games engines. I think JC said that Q3A was only using a few features of the Q3 engine. Lets see what other people can make of it.
            4. Content? Guess we will have to wait for Doom to see what kind of game play id has in them. Never play single player Q anything anyhow.

Anyway, don't launch personal attacks on a person because he said that Dot3 was better then EMBM. Now if he would just make a Dual head quake where I could have my back view on a second monitor. =0
