  • W2K Multi-monitor workaround

I own a 21'' and a 17'' monitor and I just love the multi-monitor setup of my G400Max. BUT the problem is that I just can't use the option offered by W2K: I like working at 1600x1200 on my main screen, which will not extend onto my secondary screen. I knew this limitation (for NT4.0) when I've bought the card, but like all of us, thought that this will not be the issue with W2K. Then, they asked us to wait for SP1, which finally didn't solve anything. Now being tired to wait for a solution which is already implemented in W9x, I've put back my old PCI Millenium card on and I'm using this option to do multi-display at different resolution under W2K.
My problem is that I'm experiencing random crashes with my used-to-be-rock-stable W2K. I don't use W2K for games, since I dual-boot to W98SE for gaming purposes where I'm also experiencing some lockup in a couple of D3D games where I had previously no issues (I deactivate multi-monitor prior running any game BTW).
Has any one of you some tried some experience on this peculiar mix ?

I have a Win2K/VIA box with 4 Matrox cards in it - the auxiliaries being a Mystique and 2 Millenniums. I got random crashes as well until I set the AGP LargePageMinimum switch. I also disabled BiosGuard and PowerDesk, since Matrox don't support the other 3 Matrox cards anyway, but I don't think that's related...

I set up the same thing under NT4 (G400 Max & Millenium PCI) with no reliability problems at all. Since upgrading to W2K though, I do find it crashes. I have felt the crashes are do to with display drivers, but maybe it is because of the second card.

What are the 'AGP LargePageMinimum' switch settings you used Ashley? I can't find it in the registry.

I've just removed the Millenium PCI for testing, and my lockups are gone...damned.

The older Matrox cards seem to work better with non-Matrox cards than with the G-series. The G200 and G400 just don't seem to like older Matrox cards, which is too bad because the older PCI Millennium/Mystique cards deliver better multimonitor support than DH can. Perhaps its just a G-series driver issue that can/will improve...

I have temporarily replaced the G400 with a Rage Fury and stability is better.
