  • Any problems/opinions on Win98SE ?

Hi everyone! Been running my new system happily for a few weeks now, and am contemplating installing Win98SE. I've been unable to find exactly what it adds to regular Win98, and have also in the past heard a few horror stories (though none specifically Matrox related) about it. Since my system seems to be perfectly stable at the moment, I'm a little hesistant to go install something that I may or may not need, because with my luck it could backfire.

    Any thoughts?

    Tyan S2380 Trinity K7 v. 1.02, VIA 4in1 4.24
    Nanya PC133 128MB
    Athlon 650
    Matrox G400 32MB DH, PD6.01 Beta
    IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30GB
    Kenwood 42X
    Yamaha DS-XG PCI
    Zoom 56k PCI
    Samsung 950P
    Daewoo CMC1501BA or
    Panasonic CT31XF20

    Thanks for any tips!

    Aaron

Win98SE is a very incremental upgrade from Win98...mostly bugfixes and a new feature or two.

There's a fellow who wrote a simple hack that enables DOS in WinME.

WinME is a different colored cat. Totally different TCP/IP stack, a (slightly) better version of DirectX 7a, a little bit better memory management, and no DOS layer present when booting normally. All in all, a very nice (if bloated) O/S with little to complain about for the average user.

If you MUST have DOS, Win98SE is not bad, I haven't checked the "hacked" DOS of WinME yet.

If you love the command line, Linux Mandrake 7.2 is looking interesting...

Personally I found 98SE to be more stable than 98, especially for USB functionality. I had nothing but problems with having USB devices lock up/vanish while using the system. With 98SE and the USB update (had to search for that one on the M$ site) its fine. As for ME, I didn't like it at all. The lack of dos prompt pissed me off, and several other low level tweaking abilities were removed. They basically took 98SE and dumbed it up so the average stupid user can't hose their system as easily. But it sucks for a power user.

Win98SE seems more stable on non-intel chipsets, but if you've got a stable working system already there is really very little to be gained from the upgrade apart from getting newer IE and some fixes bundled (an issue for modem users, cos they take ages to d/l )

The biggest difference between SE and old Win98 is the Internet Comnnection Sharing. If you have two or more computers networked, this is an easy way to allow internet access for all the computers at once if you share a common ISP connection. It works well, but it shares bandwidth. This means that you will notice a marked slowdown in connection speed if two computers are accessing at the same time, especially if you are stuck with a slow modem connection like I am.

Whatever version of Windows, after W95B, is dumbed down for idiots, the newer the version, the more dumbed down it is.

Unfortunately, not all new hardware/software supports W95B anymore, and in that case W98SE (Full/OEM version) is the way to go.

The Internet sharing you can do with third party software, but if you are into video editing (digital), then W98FE/GOLD/W98+W98SE UPD are not that good.
