I can only side with Joel in here:
Don't you just love pure speculation based on no facts at all?
And I'm not even a BB

As for the whole Nvidia/DX8 chapter: Who does rule the computer world? Nvidia, Matrox, 3dfx, M$, Intel, AMD, your next door neighbor who sells PCs, or just plain you?

      Render pipelines count: 3
      Texturing units count: 3
      Fillrate: 600 Mpixels/sec, 1800 Mtexels/sec
      Processing speed: 20-30 million triangles/sec
      Memory bandwidth: 6.4 Gbytes/sec
Someone out there who can explain to me what a fillrate is, in laymans words? And please, let it be one of the people above, who think they know, and about strangle the other because his/her card does 1 MTexel more per gigasecond....

Same goes for the rest there in the quote. I just pity all of you who fight over what's the best card coming out, then when it comes out, you battle over the infunctional drivers, the OGL, the whatever and the whenever, and all you use your card for at that moment is to be here on a forum, that is 2D, and doesn't show you jackshit about how your card works.

Sorry, but I don't give a damn anymore about how many Megatexels or Gigatexels a second my card can ship. When we're all playing UT, it's the linespeed that counts, not the visual gorgeousness of whatever you might see on your screen. No matter how fast your vid-card at that moment, you will still be overhauled by the missiles you fired moments ago

Errrrm, what did I do here? Oh yeah, tell you to lay off the fight, about your all so powerfull to be vid-cards, when there's other things happening in this world.

      Grow up

      Jord.

I have 183 too and when I check with Dxdiag I find that all files that are final retail are those releated to dx7 or earlier.

I find it's a funny game to try to guess what will be the next matrox, don't you .

                Jord,

Not sure if you were serious, but hey, somebody might not know.

Fillrate is a measure of the rate at which a video card can fill the screen with pixels. The units are derived from marketing departments and vary from card to card. Nobody can agree on whether the terms applies to plain pixels or pixels with sprinkles on top.

Yeah, fillrate is about as useful as Polygon rate. It's all extremely variable depending on what setup you test with. Different size pixels, different size polygons, polygon complexity, color depth, activated features, etc.

Honestly, the only way you can compare cards is benchmarks of the games you want to play on them.

The G800 has been in development for so long now, I'm sure we aren't in for a disappointment. I'm 90% positive the chip won't be the "fastest" but it will likely be the most full featured, well engineered, efficient little chip around.

And, if you absolutely have to match Joe Blow's Geforce 2 Ultra or NV20, go dual chip.

Personally, since I only have a 17" monitor, I don't need much more. 1152x864 is the highest resolution I really care for. 32-bit color is important. With the posted specs, this stuff will be cake.

Actually, I hope the card is slower than all the others. Maybe then it'll be afforable

And Jorden, c'mon, no need for such demeaning talk.

                    Hey, explain this.

Why the hell would matrox make a second rate card?
                    and....
Why do you all assume that it will be second rate?
They haven't even made a release date yet. Now I think you should all just be patient. Matrox will release when the time is right. They released an awesome product like the G400, so why can't they do it again?

Maybe they want to release it with combined software such as B17 II. Gee, wouldn't that be nice......
I would be the first to buy it if that was the case.

Seems like the top 4 (Matrox, 3dfx, NVidia, ATI) have all adopted the "don't say much till it's ready for sale" mode.

I think that that Matrox' next chip has been in development for so long, in part, because they had some employee "turnover" (from what I've read elsewhere in these forums).

There's a lot of technology to keep up with in the vid card biz now: TnL, pixel/shaders, FSAA, bandwidth reduction (like HyperZ), multichip scalability, etc. It'll be hard for Matrox to be the most feature rich product, every manufacturer will have their own strengths and weaknesses.

On top of that, everyone is under pressure because of Nvidia's incredible execution record, so Matrox will have to deliver the goods at a faster pace if they want to stay in the game. Matrox has lost a lot of "mindshare" lately in the consumer 3d space, I do hope that they can recover.

                        -AJ
Trying to figuring out what Matrox is up to is like tying to find a road that's not on the map, at night, while wearing welders googles!

As far as performance goes, as long as the G800 has a fillrate somewhere in betweeen a GF1 and a GF2, I'll be happy.

Here a couple of pics from dxdiag:

                            and:

                            plenty of directx8 files including D3d8, Dinput8 and D3dpmesh.dll

You see dx8vb.dll along with the latest build of most of the other files.!!

Anyone have thoughts about the release strategy Matrox will be using with their next card?

If i remember correct both the g200 and the g400 where announced in one month an came on the shelfes about 5 months later.

Is it possible that Matrox is doing it differently this time? I've heard rumours that the card will be on the shelfes for christmas. They haven't announced anything yet, but i think they've been developing this card for a long period now so they might actually have silicon ready.

Could it be that Matrox is doing an ATI thing (with the radeon), announcing an chip, cards and have it ready for shipment at the same time???

If this isn't the situation i feel i won't be having an new matrox card inside my sytem before spring/summer 2001
