I feel like just posting "never mind"!

My problem is with OpenGL mainly and I just finished reading "G400 Driver Rant (Depressing)".

I don't know exactly as the machine I put them on is at home and I am not. I just downloaded the following for upgrading:

VIA's AGP403.exe
Gigabyte's BIOS update 7zm_i_f9
Matrox BIOS 1.09
Matrox G400 driver 6.04.029
Matrox version 3.0 of their Tweak Utility

running under Win98SE with 64MB ram.

Your downloads are ok.

But you should really consider extending your RAM to at least 128MB, since W98SE uses ~40MB alone !!!

What are you trying to do with OpenGL? My rant was pretty specifically devoted to several problems with the ICD, but none of them should affect the average user and/or gamer.

The $$ is keeping my ram at 64 for a bit.

As for OpenGL, even my Windows OpenGL screen saver (3D Text) crashes.

Sounds like an IRQ conlict to me ...

Which drivers should I use?

I have a Gigabyte GA-7ZM mobo (Via KT133 AGPset) with a Duron 600 CPU (not overclocked) and a Millenium G400 16Mb Video Card.

Video is unstable under OpenGL and other games. Is this fixable and, if so, with which drivers?

I didn't write the my IRQ's down. I was too busy swearing and being unfriendly to those around me. I looked and did not see any conflicts.

I've never had so much difficulty with a video card. The G400 is history!

I tried originally to use the G400 on a system I built with an ASUS K7M Slot A. I spent about a week and a half trying to get it to work. That was definately IRQ problems. I dropped in an ATI and it work without a problem.

I thought I would give the G400 a second chance on this Gigabyte GA-7ZM, but it still didn't like to do anything "demanding". Only spent about 2 hours on it this time. Again, I dropped in an ATI and it worked without a problem.

I think I gave this video card a fair chance. I might have just got a bad card and I'm going to take it back.

Of course what you're not considering is that ATI cards are made to share IRQ's, whereas Matrox cards (like nvidia cards and 3dfx cards) AREN'T.

So you probably did have an IRQ problem. In fact you can run an ATI card without an IRQ (albeit at a performance hit).

True. But, I've never had a problem with the two Asus nvidia boards I've used before. Oh well, I might give the next generation of Matrox boards a shot.

I doubt that you had a bad card. I think you probably just had a configuration problem.

Didn't have any troubles with my G400 on my Abit KA7 motherboard, once I got the 4in1 drivers in from VIA.

Hey Arcaneid. Give this a try before ya toss it. The G400 likes its own IRQ but will share with "IRQ holder for PCI Steering"
Also it needs to be on IRQ 9 - 13, usually 9,10 or 11. They almost won't work on the lower ones. Dunno why myself as I am not that technically oriented, but it's true. And make sure you have gotten rid of all your old drivers, both Matrox and ATI or whatever else you have tried. Get rid of all traces both in the registry and files on your hd. There is a utility for removing the matrox drivers and it is on the matrox driver site and maybe here as well. Try these first. I have owned both a G200 and a G400 and both have been exceptionally stable and good. I do have a non-cheepy motherboard and I am a bit anal about system maintainance(sp) tho...
