My former G400 32MB DH Vanilla ran for about a year on MAX clock settingas without moaning and it still does ina friend's rig.
All I did was attaching a fan onto the HS.
Do a search in this forum and you'll find plenty reports, tips, tricks etc.

Ditto to maggi - my g400 (non max) ran at MAX speeds for around a year without any extra fans in my machine. It's now running back at normal speeds in my dad's machine as it isn't cooled as well as mine!
But, don't be afraid! Go for it - overclock until you get artifacts (usually white/multicoloured dots, or scrambled textures), then back off a few %

I use the matrox utility to overclock my max but be aware that it won't work with the latest (certified) drivers. you'll need the MGA tool with latest drivers.
I have freind who has fried 2 g400's (32m DH).
Mind you we live in warm climate, and he cranked them up until they started glowing then backed it off a tad.(probably over max specs)
