  • G400/450 with Epox EP-8KTA(+)

I'm looking at a new build, and have had niggles from the proposed constructor in regard to VIA - Matrox compatibility.
Has anyone had good (or bad) experience with
the Epox board with the KT133 chipset running a G400 or G450?

Or any other Socket A with the VIA KT133.

I found a G450 review using a MSI K7T Pro that didn't mention any hangups, so that is a good start.

There should not be any issues, as long as you use the latest drivers for both the matrox cards and the via 4 in 1's. The EPoX boards are really cool boards, and a pleasure to work with. Have not tested a G4x0 on it tho, too lazy to take mine to work with me.

This may or may not be relevant, but here it is anyway. I have a G400 in an EPoX 7KXA which was the predecessor to the 8KTA and it uses the KX133 chipset. I have heard in general that the KT133 chipset is a substantial improvement over the KX133 so you can hope. Anyway, I have had a less than stellar experience with the 7KXA, and I think that has something to do with the quality of EPoX boards rather than just the chipset.

Personally I would recommend that you go with an MSI board or an Asus board.
      Primary System:
MSI 745 Ultra, AMD 2400+ XP, 1024 MB Crucial PC2100 DDR SDRAM, Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro, 3Com 3c905C NIC,

Win XP, MS Intellimouse Optical, 17" Mag 720v2
      Seccondary System:

The 7KXA's were not the greatest boards. I have seen them not boot using one AGP card, but works fine with another. Yet the same AGP card that will not work with one 7KXA will work in another. The 8KTA's on the other hand are fairly impressive. We have tested everything from ATI Rage IIc's and Rage Pro's to Voodoo Banshee/3's and nvidia GeForces. I doubt that the G400 will be a problem in it, when using the latest drivers

Aha! Which is to say that you haven't acually tried it with a G4x0.

Which is exactly what i said in my first reply. my second was about the motherboard.

              I have a g400 and an epox 8kta.
no hangups, but sometimes the system cannot detect the graphic card (resulting in some beeps)... the next time it works (again)....

Got a EPoX EP-BX7+100 (Intel BX & Highpoint UDMA-100 raid controller) running a G400 and an overclocked Celeron II 566 @ 893 MHz. No problems so far, neither in gaming (DX7/Open GL with 5.52 & TGL 1.3) nor in business applications.

Does it need a push button reset, or will a c-alt-del suffice to get to "next time"?
