For some strange reason all troubles of this kind are solved on my little nephews PC. The only thing he had to change is disabling DMA on the cdrom, perhaps even the harddisk (I forgot)

I can't guarantee it will work, at this point I would still even recommend enabling DMA, I have it enabled on my computer. But then, I rarely play games on it.

Try to disable it and see what happens...

Could well be heat - how hot does the heatsink get on the g400? If it's a G400 MAX, check the fan is spinning.

If your BIOS has a '100/133 spread spectrum modulation' option, disable it. This makes G400's horrendously unstable. Disable video bios caching and shadowing, too.
