This is normally due to a conflict of some sort. However it's useful to have the system specs as Buuri stated

Yeah, system specs but also *when* during the install does the error come up, and any details with the error message?

        Cheers,

        Steve

I can't speak for the person who made the original post, but this sounds like the same problem I've been having with powerdesk 5.13. It occurs when windows is restarting after the install wizard prompts you to reboot the machine. Just before the windows desktop should appear I get an error message saying: Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer. (No further explanation of the error).
I reboot the machine and get the "Safe Mode" screen. If I choose normal I get the same error message at the same point, if I choose safe mode I can change to standard display driver and the machine will boot normally.
I can remove 5.13 and re-install 4.33c and everything works fine. I have not found a solution or workaround to this problem.
And yes, I un-installed the previous drivers using the "manual" uninstall method before attempting to install 5.13. I also tried reverting back to a 66 mhz bus speed.

          System Specs:
Celeron 300 (no "A")@ 376 (4.5*83); QDI Excellent EX motherboard; Productiva G-100 4 meg. AGP; win 95B, 64 meg ram, etc., etc.

Any insight would be welcome, and I would be particularly interested in hearing from other people if they have had a similar problem (as it appears that this is a problem not limited to myself).
          Cheers,
          Heed.
          Thought thinks itself.

Sounds like exactly the problem I'm having
with my system ! But before you get all
exited, I don't know the solution either
I posted about this to the "Powerdesk"
section, and got a few proposals
to solve it (thanks maggi), but they didn't help on the long run. Check out my post for the detailed description and system specs!

              Current System:

              AMD K6-2 300@350
              ASUS P5A bios v1007a
              128 MB RAM
              Sound Blaster 16 ISA
              Millennium G200 8MB bios v2.6
              4.33c certified driver
              Hyundai DeluxScan 15 Pro
              Windows 98
              Ali AGP driver v1.6
              Ali IDE driver v3.40

It'd be nice to have some system specs. Anyway first question have you used the uninstaller to remove all traces of the orginal matrox drivers?
Have check the website for update Ali drivers?

I have the same problem with pd 6.xx, but if I install VIAs agp driver the problem is solved, but it causes more problems, because i have few years old ss7 mb, so try the latest via/ali agp etc. drivers

                    my system:
some ss7 mb(not quite sure which, via mvp3)
                    k6-2 450
                    g400 dh 32mb
                    128MB

Liquid Snake try reading. Someone else found this and posted that they had the same problems on October the 28th 2000 that isn't a year ago. True they mave have been better starting a new thread however we're trying to help them out.
