  • ACPI, IRQs and G400

I have ACPI on with Win98 FE. Does it matter if the G400 is on a low IRQ or on a shared IRQ with ACPI on? With ACPI on the BIOS assigns the G400 IRQ 5. I manually set it to IRQ 9. If it's helpful, here is my IRQ list:

    0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
    2 Programmable interrupt controller
    3 (free)
    4 (free)
    5 Vortex AU8830 PCI Audio
5 Vortex AU8830 Multifunction PCI Platform
5 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
5 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
    6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
    7 EPSON Printer Port (LPT1)
    8 System CMOS/real time clock
    9 Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead - English
9 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
9 SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus
    10 Linksys LNE100TX Fast Ethernet Adapter(LNE100TX v4)
10 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
11 Promise Technology Inc. Ultra66 IDE Controller
11 ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
    12 Cordless7 (PS/2)
    13 Numeric data processor
14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14 Intel(r) 82371AB/EB/MB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
15 Intel(r) 82371AB/EB/MB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

I'm not convinced that ACPI with Win98 is really ACPI in the same sense that it is in Win2k... i.e. Hardware polling.

The fact that it LETS you change the IRQ is pretty indicative of it NOT being so.

I had to install Win98 (albeit not Win98SE) without support for ACPI to get my G400 to work at all. With ACPI enabled, IRQ setup was fine (always used either 10 or 11 and only shared with holder for PCI steering..), but I had a memory conflict.

Reinstalled Win98 without ACPI support and all has been fine ever since.

How did you get Win98 to install without ACPI? I switched the ACPI BIOS in the system device listing to Plug & Pray (failsafe) to get my mobo (Asus CUBX) to run my Celery 533A at 800.

to install win98 without ACPI you use the command "setup.exe /p i" at install.
