What AGP speed are you running at?

Have you tried setting it to 1x?

If this works, maybe you've got a emi-problem of some sort...
Why would I send my pants to New Jersey?

32bpp, BIOS set to 256Mb AGP aperature. No idea what AGP speed - how do I find out?

Just a thought, but do you know that openGL doesnt work when dualhead is enabled?

If you are running two monitors, try weitching back to single head.

Its a bugger, and there are ways around it, but for fault diagnosis its one of the first things to try.

        DirectX should be ok though.

Also, do you have the AGP set to 2/3, not 1/1 in bios?

I pulled out the 64Mb DIMM with no effect. Set the AGP aperature to 64Mb, again with no effect.

I've looked into the AGP settings and found that I was running 2x. I used the Matrox utility to go back to 1x, but it is still reporting that the "chipset" (motherboard, according to the docs) is set to 2x. I looked in my BIOS manual and there's nothing there that controls the AGP speed.

I did find that there's an AGP jumper on the mobo called "AGP Turbo" that was set to turbo mode (runs the AGP clock at 100MHz instead of 66MHz). I set that back to 66MHz. NOLF doesn't lock up now, woohoo! The really wierd thing is - this shouldn't have changed anything. My mobo is a rev 1.1 AX6B that only has "Auto" and "100MHz" jumper settings. The Auto mode will detect the FSB speed of the P-III as 100MHz and set the AGP speed to that. So I'm a little confused as to why this fixed NOLF...

Blender still doesn't work though. I'm going to look around for other OpenGL things to try just in case it's another strangeness that's stuffing up.

          I'm not running dual-head.

I did have to switch back to the 6.04 drivers from 6.10 due to some strange texture artifacts in NOLF - looked like the z buffer was slightly screwey or something. 6.04 is fine.

Your AGP speed should be 66Mhz. Turbo mode will set it to 100Mhz and auto will set it back to 66Mhz (not the FSB of your machine).

I'm surprised the card worked at all at that speed. Mine doesn't work properly above 89Mhz AGP.

You said Half-Life worked fine. In Direct3D or OpenGL?

BTW, when you say DirectX, you mean Direct3D, right?

Raptor, you're quite right. I was reading the manual wrong - it is now running at 66MHz. I just downloaded the latest ST:EF demo (it's OpenGL) and it worked fine.

Blender still doesn't work - I'm suspecting that something else in the system is screwing with it.

Thanks to everyone who helped me out here!

                    You're welcome, Richard.

I wouldn't hold your breath for Blender, but that's the sort of thing you can bug Matrox tech. support about on their forums - they are in the process of fixing up the professional app. support.
