  • Non-DualHead G450?

I was looking over at Dabs.com to see if the had any G450s (or even G800s ) I stock, what I found was a little puzzling!

Yes, the Millennium G450 16MB DualHead as expected, but, I also found this:

    MilleniumG450 16MB LE Version

Is it possible that this card doesn't have DualHead? The listed specs are different but the lack of DualHead in the title and this little 'LE' worry me

    Paul.

Looks to still have DH but is using SDRAM instead of DDR.

      Warning: Matrox rant ahead.

And then, of course, the million dollar question is: 64BITS SDRAM????!!?? (

Are they mad? I guess if Matrox is going on this way (constantly releasing new products that can't even match their older ones) they'll follow S3 "real soon now" (tm).

Seems if you buy the NV20 you'll get the real G800 - if it's true that NVidia "acquired" 18 members of Matrox' development staff at once.... wonder if there's anybody left except the marketing people.

If the G800 is to be released only in Q2/2001 then I don't think Matrox will be able to survive much longer. Maybe they won't even be able to actually produce it by then (Bitboys, 3DFx).

Sorry for the rant, but things are going very, very wrong at Matrox the last months, they make the same mistake another time of totally misunderstanding (or ignoring in arrogance?) the market - they did this before when the 3D chips started to show and were ignored by M putting them way behind the competition. You think they should have learned from that...

        what are you talking about?

Matrox is doing everything right. Spend less $$ over a longer time to come out with a product that makes them as much profit as possible for the longest time possible.

About the G450LE. If you are buying PCs for a University or corporation, do you want them to be fast in Quake3, or to be cheap, high quality, and have Dual-Head? I think being fast in 3D is a bad thing in this situation.

I'll agree they are falling way behind in the gaming market, but thats only a small percentage of their revenue. The corporate and OEM market is where Matrox is aiming the G450.

Who really needs more than 16Mb video RAM? Most varsity monitors only run at 800X600, some of them at 1024X768. I think 8Mb is enough for that.

The extra ram is only usefull for textures in games.

Sorry for the rant, in a bad mood, and sick of hearing about big bad Matrox.

Okay, I'll bite. Been avoiding saying this for some time. Matrox is running a business. They make decisions that assure that they can stay in business. Look at 3Dfx. They're paying for their poor decisions. nVidia has massive resources and has been able to acquire some formidable talent. Matrox has to be very strategic in which markets they pursue and at what level in order to succeed against such a powerhouse. Matrox has been around for quite a while and I'd imagine they plan on being around for some time to come. As gamers, some of you may be frustrated by Matrox's actions but I'd hope you'd also appreciate having the company around to support your card later. If you have an immediate need or burning desire to obtain a faster gaming card, go out and buy another vendor's card now. You'll have plenty of notice when Matrox announces their new gaming card to wait for the card to become available and at a price you want to pay and for the drivers to be proven out. This isn't all going to happen next week.

            Back to the original post....

            All G450s are DualHead.
The Maven chip that ran the second head on G400 is now integrated into the main chips, which are the same on all G450 cards.
You will not see any singlehead G450s AFAIK.
The "LE" tag reffers mostly to the memory used on the card.

              Additional info....
Some G450"LE" models will come with break-out cables and CDs, some "LE" (those sold to "system integrators"...IE, bulk OEM cards) will not come with these (though they are still dualhead).
Break-out cables will be available separatly for ~10 bucks from the Matrox on-line store.

My advice: Stay away from the "LE" models. You have no way of knowing exactly what you are gonna get.
