  • does *every* g400 support 4x AGP?

I bought a G400 SH 16MB about a year ago. Trying it on a 4xAGP mainboard and using the Matrox Tweak Utility, the 4x of the mainboard was detected but I cannot set the video card at 4x.
That what happens on Matrox Tweak Utility:

    AGP:
    ( )Default
    ( )1x
    (*)2x
    ( )4x <---shadowed

Maybe the video card does not support 4x?

    Very possible.
Only certain revisions of the card actually supported 4x AGP.
Actually, I was going to follow this up.
When I bought my G400 MAX ages ago, I bought it after reading that it was 4x AGP, even though the motherboards didn't exist it was ready for future upgrades.
Then when I found out mine wasn't 4x enabled I was pretty upset.
I was going to take it further, I still have the original articles that say it is a 4x card.
In the end, well nothing can max out 2x AGP yet, and by the time 4x actually makes a difference in anything (except 3D Mark) I'll have a new card.

It cost one penny to cross, or one hundred gold pieces if you had a billygoat.

The serial number of your card tells you if it's 4X enabled. There's a thread somewhere about it. Mine isn't 8-(

Why can I never actually find these threads that I remember though?

The first batches of G400s (before there where any 4x mobos available) where 2x/4x. They performed 2x AGP transfers, but would also fit into a 4x slot, and auto-adjust to the proper voltage.
When 4x mobos actually came out, and Matrox could test with these mobos, the G400s became 4x.

Look at the part nuber on the white sticker on the back of the card. If there is a "4A" (or maybe it's "A4"), then it is capable of 4x transfers.

But, as has been mentioned here, 4x gives no actual performance boost. Even today most games and apps don't show a difference between 1x and 2x performance. 4x is all hype.

if your card supports x4 AGP, then it will have a 4A in the serial number like G4+MDH4A32GR. absence of 4A means x2 AGP max.
