  • Chaintech K6/2 G400 instabilities.

My flatmate recently got himself a M$ gamevoice, and a PCI USB card to use with it.

Whilst the gamevoice runs fine (on my machine), the second we added the card to his machine it went very yampy. After a complete strip down, and the addition of some supports that were lacking on the motherboard he decided to reinstall windows.

The second we install the matrox drivers (610) the machine becomes 100% unstable, lasting almost 2 mins sometimes without crashing.

The VIA drivers we've tried are the latest official (1.24?) and the 'beta' (1.25), neither seems to help.

The board is a Chaintech 5AGM2, running a K6/2 350. The only card in there atm is the G400 and WinMil (possibly the problem here) is installed completely clean every time.

I've had a quick look around but didn't see anything. Have I missed a thread or can someone suggest what we're doing wrong.

G400 on IRQ 11 atm btw, only one other IRQ assigned, 14/15 to controllers.

Wow! This one got buried without a reply...

Don't load the whole 4in1 shebang...before you load the Matrox drivers, load just the VIA GART AGP driver (4.03d, I think is the newest). Reboot and load the Matrox drivers...

Don't install VIA IRQ mini-router if present in Vai all-in one driver.
My 5AGM2 crashed in a few second after the boot!!!
This happend with both G200 and G400max!

I have been fighting a very intermittent problem with my K6-2 400 MHz processor for 6 months. I've been through the via 4 in 1 driver problems with the latest version not working properly - had to revert to previous version. My real fix; however, was to increase the CPU core voltage from 2.2 to 2.3 volts. My CPU chip was having trouble executing mailnly newer Microsoft software such as FS2000 and IE 5, it even bombed while scroll wheeling in windows help. I have no problems now with the increased core voltage. Make sure you have good thermal contact between your fan/heat sink and the AMD processor. I took a tip from the overclockers and removed the rubber square from the bottom of the fan/heat sink and used heat sink compound to mount it to the CPU for better heat transfer.

          Good luck,
          Larry
