To my suprise after I asked about the G800 and expecting a typical answer like we can't comment on that. I got a totally different answer. This person said that they are working on the G800, and it will be a gaming card. Obviously I trust this news is better than any rumor out on any website since this news came from inside matrox. If their tech support egingeers are telling people this maybe it's time for matrox press to say they are working on it, heh.

I have no problem believing Matrox will release a card called a G800, I just don't know what will be in it or how much it will cost. Not knowing that, there's really not much to say about it, or any reason to wait around for it. I would guess in 3 months Matrox will announce the thing, and sometime next September you'll be able to buy one.

LOL when Matrox beta testers mention this, Ya'll call it rumors... I call it ignorant.

Just to note I didn't ask the guy about the G800 directly. I asked him will matrox be coming out with any videocards that will work better with my system. He said the G800.
then I asked will that be a business card or gaming card, he said gaming. He said they are working on it.

It is still a rumour, until there is a press release with specs I consider everything I hear about phantom products to be so much BS. Even then I suspect it's all BS, but at least it's official BS and something to gab about. All you have is a theory about a product name, that's it.
It's not improbable that Matrox will get a card called a G800 out, they put out a card called a G400, makes sense, could happen. It could even be a video card for gamers, they did do one before, although it's been so long it's kinda shakey, it doesn't indicate a serious intention in this market. It's been long enough that they will either put out another gaming card or leave this part of the video card industry for good, (or be put out of the industry through lack of interest whether they want to leave or not).
I also believe NVIDIA will produce another card, they tend to do that. I wouldn't be surprised if ATI did as well. Both are very eager in this market. It is possible that 3dfx might survive long enough to get Rampage out, or whatever their next card is going to be called. Either they will or they will be gone totally, they are very dependent on the retail market. Hey, it's even possible BitBoys will get a card out, but they have been long long now that it's a stretch, ala Matrox.
I wouldn't find it incredulous the idea that the sun will rise tomorrow either, whether or not I get to see it through the clouds. However, nothing I just wrote is based on anything I've read at MURC.
As for the opinion of driver beta testers that there is an upcoming Matrox card worth waiting for, perhaps it is, to THEM, they also loved the G450, which kinda puts their scale of appreciation a wee bit over the top for me. If I don't even believe they have information considering the paranoia of the source, well, they can't prove that they do, the point is moot. I think they are just playing games trying to keep people interested in Matrox like the faithful folks they are.
[Damn snow will soon be over the roof it looks like.]

I don't think someone inside matrox would be saying G800 is being worked on, if he values his job. But the info I got came from over a telephone line by voice, from a matrox imployee, that's way better than what ant has posted or anyone else, so far as I am concered G800 is coming.
Mostly all the G800 stuff came from someone finding G800 stuff in the drivers for G400. But theres a difference when someone from matrox over the phone says we're working on it than see'ing it in some G400 driver and guessing it.

Galvin:
Only question is...how can they keep this level of speculation and hope alive until 6 months into the new year.
I suspect something of substance will appear sooner...but don't expect silicon until Q3 2001.

Galvin, I'm not really wanting to be argumentative with you at all, especially seen as I'm reading your GHW thread at the moment as well!
However (yes, there had to be a 'however' ), you admittedly said that you asked about the G800, yet then said you never mentioned it. This, and I'm not saying you are, sounds like lies. Liers change stories and it sounds like you've done this - that's why people also seem to be struggling to believe.
You're are also saying that this should be more believable than what Ant has posted etc. However, a certain Matrox PR guy has already let this info slip beforehand, at some developers conference a while back, this was then posted at Ant's site and another site I believe. This is quite believable, as Matrox asked it to be removed. I can't quite remember the specifics of this story, but it was probably a leak anyway.
To say what you're saying to us isn't any more believable than that is wrong. Not to say I don't believe you myself however.
And, to say that Matrox are working on a new graphics card in 'secret' isn't really surprising news, we all know this (even if the BBs tease us )
Thanks for letting us know anyway,
Paul.
