  • Black/White only TV-OUT (s-video) -Win2k

    Help
    I only get black/white tv-output (s-video) in Win2k, composite works fine.
    I have Matrox G400DH (5.20 drivers)

Check to make sure there isn't a setting somewhere on your TV to tell it to use the s-video. If I don't have this turned on, I get black and white through the s-video. When it's on, the s-video is fine (and reasonably sharp even at 800x600).

Does your tv have a s-vhs input, or are you using a scart connection?

If you use scart and your tv is somewhat old then you cannot use s-vhs in colour. I had the exact same problem with my old tv.

I've seen it do that when the SVHS cable is too long. The composite produces more juice, and can go further.

Sorry, but that's just plain wrong ...

Composite offers a bandwidth of ~4 MHz while s-video offers ~7.5 MHz and because of the fact that the signal is split into luminance and chrominance, s-video can be ported over longer distances than composite.

          Cheers,
          Maggi

PS: The other thoughts are most likely right, i.e. make sure your TV is set to use Y/C connections, cos usually the luminance signal (Y) is carried through the composite wire.

            Well, Maggi...

I won't tell you that u're wrong since I bet you know more about this than me, but the fact still stands. I've seen this behaviour.

            Short S-video - Worked.
            Long S-video(diffrent cabels) - Didn't work.
            Long Composite - Worked.

              Hi Hamlet,

sorry, if my post offended you somehow ...

My denying reply was meant for your comment about FBAS (composite) producing more juice and not that you saw see it happen.

The phenomenon that you describe is just not logical, but since you've observed it, my guess is that the long s-video cable was either of 'not-so-high' quality or simply defect.

              Regards,
              Maggi
