  • Another G800 mention

    From Ace's hardware:

Matrox representatives have assured us once again that Matrox will offer a real gamers card ("G800") in Q1 of 2000. While there are many indications that Matrox might not be able to offer a faster card than the NV20, we hope for a card with a good price/performance ratio as we do not really need anymore 500$ videocards on the market...

      Q1 calendar or fiscal?

I also wonder if it will just be announced in Q1 and not available till the summer. I do recall some website saying that Matrox would announce a high performance card in March of 2000 (at some conference, is the GDC in March?).

I'm about to buy a NV card (rats) - was going to get a v5 (oops! not anymore), can't go with the radeon because it doesn't play well with w2k or via chipsets, I have both. Now I have hope that I will have a Matrox card back in my system again someday

I also recall someone posting that Matrox wasn't listed as GDC participants... someone else knows more about this?

Hey Aj I don't know about the win2k issues goto rage3d forums to learn about that but I can tell you that my Radeon 32 meg DDR worked great on my Tyan Trinity 400 (VIA)board. I have the radeon in an Asus 815 board now and there is really no performance difference that I can tell. I can also tell you I never had one hiccup but I was using win9x.

And your are right about Elsa 2d I have a erazor x (sdr) and I have tried a hercules gts and can tell you 2d on the hercules card much worse than elsa card.

Personally I recommend you go with the radeon good speed and the 2d and image quality beats any geforce card.

            DRED,

Thanks, but it's too late! I did buy the Elsa from an online store that has no restocking fees till after Jan 31 2001, so if I don't like it, it goes back and then I'll try the Radeon.

I have noticed that benchmarks with the latest drivers are roughtly equal between win98 and w2k. But considering the headaches I've had with my P3V4X, W2K, G400, V2 and sblive - I wanted to minimize my likelyhood of having problems. ATI is doing a complete rewrite of their drivers - that could be very good, or very bad. I prefer to wait and see.

            Thanks again though,
            -AJ

I can't wait to see what the "G800" will be, knowing matrox, even if it's not the performance king, it will have some cool features.

Don't hold your breath. If its 'announced', it will be months before you can get one.. remember the G400MAX supply problems?
