  • G400Max Install under W95A and Win NT4 =NOTHING

    Hi everybody,

yesterday we try deperately to install a G400Max on Win95A SP1/WinNT SP5 Dualboot system.
The system runs at the moment with a Millenium I PCI 4MB.
Under Win 95A we use driver 4.12.13 and under NT4 we use 3.63a with the Millenium I.
In this configuration the system runs stable and without a problem.

    System specs:
    Asus P2B Rev. 1.02 Bios 1012 Final
    Pentium III 550Mhz Slot 1
    320MB PC100 RAM
    2X IBM DDRS 9,1GB U-SCSI
    Plextor Ultraplex 40
    Teac R-55S
    330 Watt power supply

    NO IDE DEVICES

Millenium I PCI 4MB in PCI Slot 1
Adaptec 2940AU SCSI Controller in PCI Slot 3
Network Card Arowana 10MBit in PCI Slot 2
AVM Fritz Card in PCI Slot 4
Soundblaster 64 in ISA Slot 2

    IRQs are assigned as followed:
    0 system clock
    1 keyboard
    2 interrupt controller
    3 Com 2
    4 Com 1
    5 SoundBlaster 64
    6 Floppy
    7 LPT 1
    8 Clock
    9 AVM Fritz Card
    10 Adaptec 2940 AU
    11 Arowana Ethernet Card
    12 PS/2 Mouse
    13 Numeric Coprozessor
    15 Millenium 1

    Bios settings:
    PNP OS=NO
    Apertersize 128MB
"Assign IRQ to VGA" is not available.

We tried to install the G400Max as follows:
    1. Set res back to standard VGA 16 colors under Win95 and NT4. Uninstalled the drivers with PD Uninstall under both OS.
At that point both OS were still running without a problem in VGA mode after rebooting.
    2. Switched the Millenium I for the G400Max (leaving PCI Slot 1 EMPTY) and went into the Bios to set AperterSize from 128MB to 256MB.
Then we try to boot now, either Win95 or Win NT the system hangs.

Under Win95 the system even refuses to boot into safe mode and stops with different error messages "Cannot load XMSMNR manager" or Missing vxd file"
Sorry but i cannot remember the exact terms. There were about four diffrent messages, but never two error messages at the same time.
Under NT4 the system stops without a message at the "Blue Screen" during boot process.

So we were NOT able to install any driver or missing patch...

Before the Millenium I the system was equiped with a ELSA Erazor I 4MB AGP card, but the drivers of that card were removed before installing the Millenium I.

The only thing we can do is booting into DOS with a boot disk and the characters under DOS are not corrupted, so i think the bios of the G400Max is not corrupted. Right?
Unfortunately i don't know the bios version of the G400Max.

    Hope anybody has a idea/hint/solution.

    Thanks

I do not know about NT4, but 95 and 95A do not support AGP properly and will cause many errors. 95B, 95C, and above do. It is no wonder you are having trouble with that.

Download the service updates for both OS's

You need SP3 at least (from memory) for NT, and OSR 2.1 (from memory) for win95.

For win95 you could try just the USB update. That also includes AGP files.

If you are getting a DOS box, then it almost certinaly isnt a hardware problem.

Oh, did you try clearing your CMOS if you do have those updates? You might have a memory conflict (base memory, not IRQ or anything).
