  • Constant Crashing with G450

    Short story: One of my friends is upgrading his machine piece by piece, and it was the video card's turn, so we got a G450 and installed it.

    The end result is that windows would start up, and then crash (presumably in something in the start up). This happened with the drivers that came with the card, and with 6.1 and 6.23 drivers.

    The system is a Celeron 400 with a EP-V370B motherboard. There is a 100bt network card and an ISA SB16 card installed as well.

    The exact error is at 0028:C001409B VxD VMM(01)+0001309B

    Any help would be appreciated. I'm going nuts, and I have to have this finished soon.

    First off, what was the old video card and how did you go about removing ALL the old drivers?

    Next, could you list the irq assignment?

      The old card was a motion 771, and honestly, I probably didnt' do a good job of removing the old drivers-- I just let it load the standard VGA drivers on top of it before installing the G450.

      Is there something more detailed I should do?

      Thanks!

        Try doing a search for the following drivers/files:

        GXE64*.vxd
        VISION*.drv
        VISION*.vxd
        MOTION*.drv
        MOTION*.vxd
        NUMBER9.vxd
        HAWKEYE.INI
        NUMBER9

        then delete them

            None of the files you list exist on this machine.

            Here's the IRQ list:
            0 - timer
            1 - kbd
            2 - PIC
            5 - DFE520TX Ethernet
            6 - Floppy
            8 - Clock
            9 - AEW64
            10 - VIA Tech 3038 PCI->USB
            11 - Generic VGA (matrox drivers uninstalled)
            12 - PS/2
            13 - NDP
            14 - Primary IDE
            15 - Secondary IDE

            NOte this is with the G450 installed, but without the drivers installed.

                  did you install windows vga drivers first then the matrox drivers? I understand that that order is important!
                  I take it that there were no problems before the video upgrade!

                    You failed to mention if you installed the VIA 4in1 drivers for your machine. If you haven't please do.

                      If you have the choice in bios, be sure to set agp first

                      Also, is this celeron being overclocked or is it set up at 100mhz fsb?

                        One more thing:
                        Go into safemode, remove anything that appears under display adapter, then reboot

                          Ok, so I spent the day working on this machine-- I decided to completely remove windows and start from scratch. It worked beautifully for two reboots, then the Blue Screen of Death started re-appearing.

                          Here's what I did:
                          * Updated MB BIOS
                          * Deltree C:\windows
                          * Installed Windows 98 SE
                          * Installed VIA 4-1 (downloaded from VIA)
                          * Installed DFE-530 drivers
                          * used "Windows Update" to get critical fixes
                          * Installed Matrox Drivers V6.23

                            And it gets better yet...

                            Now I'm getting a BSD with the message:
                            VFAT Device Initalization Failed
                            A device or resource rquired by VFAT is not present or is unavaiable. VFAT cannot continue loading.
                            System Halted.

                            None of this happened with the Number9 Motion 771 card installed. And I'll be honest, I'm really baffled with this error message.

                              Well, put the number 9 back in, if you have it, load its drivers and see if you get the same errors now.
