Tweaking Help!

Hi, I've installed an old Millenium II (250MHz DAC) to use with Win2K. Using Mark Veneziano's PDRM I added a custom resolution of 1440x1080 to use on a 21" monitor. But I can only get a max refresh rate of 70Hz in 32-bit mode at this resolution.

Is it possible to get 75Hz (or even 85Hz)? I don't think it's a card limitation since the pixel clock is only ~170K at 70Hz, and it allows *much* higher rates at 16-bit, even beyond 100Hz. 24-bit would be ok too but for some reason the custom resolution has no 24-bit option, just 8, 16 and 32.

One other question, is there a tweak guide for Matrox's .INF file? I'd like to add 1440x1080 so it installs with the stock resolutions.

I'm running at 1440x1080x32 @ 85Hz on my Dell P990 monitor. That's as high as my monitor allows (96Khz horizontal refresh rate).

I don't really see your problem, as you can tweak that resolution with Powerdesk to fit your monitor on the Hz

And you can ues MTSTU nowadays to add resolutions, including to the slider in the display properties (though I am not sure if it works with the M2).

Thanks for the info. My monitor can go to 121KHz so that's not the problem.

In PD the vert. rate goes to 70 and then stops, regardless of which monitor I select (I've tried many, including Mitsubishi's own 2040u INF and "VESA 1600x1200x85 + 2048").

MTSTU gives an error that no AGP card was detected (this is a PCI card).

I saw something in another thread about Powerstrip, maybe that will do the trick. Thanks again!

Well, no luck with Powerstrip. Still stuck at 70Hz. Wish I could figure out where this limitation is coming from. The card has no problems doing 85Hz at 1600x1200 but can't do 75Hz @ 1440x1080 ???

You can reach up to 100Hz at 1440x1080; up to 120Hz if you switch to the more "standard" 1400x1050.

At 1440x1080x100Hz, the DAC would be at 218MHz, and your monitor would need to be capable of accepting a 113kHz horizontal scan frequency.

I don't know how you'd do this with PowerDesk, but with PowerStrip you would need 3.0 since earlier versions don't support the Millenniums.

Thanks Ashley! Powerstrip 3.0 handled it with no problem. Pixel clock at 1440x1080x32 @ 85Hz is only 181.3.

I'm still curious why Powerdesk can't do the same thing.

Never mind that last post. Turns out I was running in 16-bit mode at 1440x1080, not 32.

So far the bottom line is this: using the latest Millenium II driver in PD6, 24 and 32-bit modes are not available at anything over 1280x1024 (this includes using Powerstrip 3.0). But using the embedded driver on the W2K CD, all supported color depths & resolutions are available.

So it looks like the choice is between having custom resolutions or true color.
