  • overclocking with a g-400

    Hi,

I know there are alot of people overclocking there videoboards, but I don't want to do that I'm overclocking my computer, and I'm just wondering if there's anything I should do concerning my g-400. I have a PIII 600e and I'm running it between 800-900mhz. It works stabily, but I don't want to get any nasty suprises. I don't know too much about this, so any experienced help would be appreciated...

As long as you're not overclocking the AGP bus speed when you overclock the processor, you should be just fine. The G400 overclocks well and shouldn't cause any problems, even if the AGP bus gets a little overclocked.

    Enjoy your Overclock!

Yeah, my biggest problem is that I don't really know if I am clocking the agp bus. All I did is raised the fsb to 133mhz from the standard 100mhz. I don't really need to clock the videoboard 'cause I don't play games, or do 3d. Or would it help when using music appz? I don't really see how it would. In the matrox forum they mentioned that I should'nt raise the speed of the agp-buss over 66mhz. How do I know if I'm doing that? In the manual for my motherboard it states what the speed of the pci buss will be (it will rise to 37mhz if I remember correctly) Sorry if I'm not being very specific... My computer is running very stably even at 900mhz, but I'm keeping it at 740 untill I get proper cooling.

Because you're using 440BX chipsets which doesn't officially support 133MHz FSB. By raising the FSB to 133MHz, your AGP clock will be 133*(2/3) which is roughly 89MHz. This is out-of-specs operating environment.

I think I selected 1/3 on my motherboard... but I get the point. If I'm using 1/3 it will then be 44,3 mhz, simple enough. Will this bring down the performance?

I highly doubt there is such a setting (1/3) on a motherboard with a intel BX chipset. Do you have any software to check the bus speed(sisoft sandra or some h-oda tools)?

If you were really running with AGP at 44MHz then yes it would lower your performance.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

AGP at 1/3? Can´t be done.
The BX chipset gives only two possibillities,
1/1 or 2/3. So if your FSB is higher than 100 mhz you´re out of spec, as Kjliew already pointed out.
The PCI bus on the other hand can run at 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4, making way for FSB at +100 without o/c the PCI bus. This setting has no impact on the AGP bus.

Hmm, so obviously I did'nt have a clue... what are the risks when doing this? The card seems to work fine for the moment. I passed by at overclockers.com, and alot of the people with a similar setup had fsb up to 150mhz.
