"Perhaps they communicate by changing colour? Like those sea creatures .."
"Lobsters?"
"Really? I didn't know they did that."
"Oh yes, red means help!"
Yeah, don't hold your breath waiting for the next Matrox card.. you'd be long dead and decayed from suffication.
Apparently nothing is coming out of CeBit (what a surprise),and from the little blurb on the main page, don't expect the 'next card' until 'summer'. Which means we don't even know if its the really good card, or just another one like dissapointing G450.
So.. card announced in summer.. lets be generous and say July. Card on sale in late August.. supply problems -> little available for several months (ala G400MAX). Card somewhat available with some effort for christmas. Bah.. screw this. I'm sick of 'soon'.
I've been a very loyal Matrox supporter for quite a few years, but they've really pissed me off lately. Yeah, this belongs in the soap box forum, but I couldn't wait to post over there :P
"But frankly speaking, you may expect a completely new chip...soon' "
[Eh] the Canadian secret code word Im surprised the Russians used it so well and duped that employee in divuging a morsel of info, [unlike some yankee-z who say it at the end of every sentence when they find out your Canadian ] hmmm r those guys KGB?? will matrox wait until the 28th to announce something, can the Kyro II be supplied good drivers from Hercules, will Microsoft force people to register their software everytime they change a component?
can I possibly get any stupider?
wait for these answers and more later

It's the G-wait-hundred, it's main features are, create tons of rumors, make you wait, create more rumors, makes you wait, create more rumors, make you wait...
Who said that nothing was coming out of CeBIT? What's a G800?
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.
For some reason, my post yesterday got chopped? Just thought I would respond to a few things. In fact, I asked quite a few of the questions you guys are askingon a different forum where there is a pretty good PVR base.
1. 2D: I've been told that it is much better than NV's 2D quality...probably regarded by Matrox users as somewhat inferior to G400 quality, but very good nonetheless.
2. Dot-3: Of all the whiz-bang features of the GeForce-series, this is about the only one I give a crap about, as there are a few games supporting it. Kyro2 supports it, and does it well.
3. T&L: Whoever said that T&L and tile-based-renderers cant coexist is simply wrong, bottom line. In fact, they're downright ignorant. Why? Because it already exists *now*. Naomi2 is the product that Sega uses, and it was completed almost 1 year ago. It works, it's out there in the market....People like Tim Sweeney, of Unreal fame, are just ignorant if they proclaim such a thing.
4. By the way...If you haven't seen the leaked slide of PVR's next product...In a nutshell, 4 pixel pipelines (doubles the Kyro2), T&L, DDR support.
5. T&L: One more thing. There's a few ways to look at hard-wired T&L, since that's what we're talking about with the Radeon/GeForce cards. Despite the fact that it's basically been out there since August of 1999 (when the GF-256 was introduced), there are truly but a handful of titles that expose the feature. Furthermore, those that do expose the feature already run extremely well on non-T&L cards, faster CPU's, and/or don't offer any increased detail over non-T&L cards.
Another aspect...DX8 will render today's T&L units useless! Take a look @ Anandtech's GeForce3 review. They specifically noted that when using actual DX8 titles, the T&L falls back to software, for those cards (ahem, GeForce2/Radeon) that have it! So, what I'm saying is that the feature, going forward, is useless! And...it's the future that nVidia's been trying to sell people on! So, it's pretty laughable to see a lot of nVidia 'homers' say that the Kyro2 is inferior because it doesn't have T&L (despite the obvious fact that there might only be 2 titles that really use this feature), and the GTS's own T&L is already outdated/replaced.
One last thing on T&L. Remember that demo by "The Whole Experience" ? DMZG? Isle of Morg? Well, that was supposed to be a T&L technology demo. It really sucked on non-T&L hardware. However, the Kyro flys in this demo. Why? High overdraw
6. If Serious Sam is any indication of future games, traditional renderers are in trouble
Just a few notes I remembered about DMZG...
DMZG was coded around DX7 and it used DX T&L routines. It used Ge-farts T&L hardware engine, but if no GF was present, it defaulted to DX7 software T&L, that is highly SSE and 3dNow optimized. I remember that going from a celeron 450 to a K7-500 almost doubled the results of that benchmark, and there´s no way a athlon 500 to have 2x the x86 FPU power of a celeron 450.
I got now around 52 fps with a K7tb-1000. Not too shaby for a "game" engine that would definitly require T&L hardware to run.
And yes, overdraw is a problem, because that result is at 640x480x16, and the performance drops quickly when increasing res/color depth, showing that it´s heavily fill-rate limited, NOT geometry limited with the G400.
So here we go again, the SIMD modern cpu´s have (SSE 1/2, 3dNow, E3dNow) can push LOTS of FP calculations if properly used. That´s up with game developers.

allright, just came home from cebit. got a matrox pen, and miss marvel (or was it miss millenium???) was so nice to give me a t-shirt. they didnt say anything about the g800, but they are starting to make fun of us in public.
one of the miss m's was holding up a sign which said "g8000maxxx3 sighted over texas" during the show.
when i asked one of the matrox people about the g800 he didnt really give me an answer ("i heard rumors about a new card, called g800" his answer:"yep, we heard those rumors, too" )
he said that matrox is definitley gonna release a new chip sometime (he didnt say soon, he said sometime), but whether it will be called g800 or have the specs everyone talks about is not sure. guess they told them to say that, cause the other matrox guy i asked (on the other side of the booth ) said about the same thing.
another thing is that during the show a third lady arrived, and miss marvel and miss millenium asked: "who is that, shes stealing us the show".
and at the beginning they were saying something about rumors as well.
