  • Slow green screen when loading Windows

When my Windows 98se loads, the green screen sometimes lasts about 5 Sec before the desktop is displayed, but other times it takes about 55 Sec. I can not establish a pattern - sometimes it is fast & sometimes it is slow.

Sometimes the shutdown green screen does the same but the delay is not as bad (about 20 Sec). They don't seem related - one time the start up will be slow but the shut down normal, sometimes both are fast or both are slow etc.

Could my G-450 be causing this? If so, what I can do about it? It's not hurting anything but it is driving me nuts.

    Thanks, Bill

The delay could be caused by your network card trying to obtain an IP for the computer from a non-existing (?) DHCP server. Check your network setting, and if you don't need it (that is, you have specified your computer a static IP) uncheck any "obtain IP automatically" or such options.

98SE has been known to have lots of issues with shutdown delays, and it is not necessarily related to the boot-time thingy.

I suspected the network card and physically removed it but still had the problem. Someone suggested I assign an IP address but I don't know enough about networking to know what number to assign or where to get one.

The only place I can find to deselect automatic IP assignment requires a IP number if automatic is deselected.

I have two computers networked to a cable modem - is there any such thing as a IP number in this setup?

        Give it 192.168.0.1
        netmask 255.255.255.0
that is in the private address range (willnever conflict with a Internet address)
