  • Electic Matrox INTERVIEW w/Executive

    Hi,

My name is Rajeev Kadam and I am one of the hardware reviewers at Electic Tech (http://www.electic.com). We are going to be conducting an interview with one of the execs at Matrox (can't name which one) and we wanted users from around the web to pitch their questions. You are free to ask questions about future Matrox products, financial stability, and the overall outlook of Matrox. Hopefully all of these will be answered.

Please post your questions here. If you want to make sure your question is heard, you can also post it in the Electic Tech forums thread located http://www.electic.com/iforum/topic....um=1&topic=100

Thanks. The interview is scheduled in a few days so ask away!

    Greetings electic
    and welcome to murc!

    I have a question...
does Matrox even care that they are losing customers to Nvidia, ATI and ST (when the KyroII is available)?
I've had a MatroxG400MAX since Sept99. It's truly a great video card, but it's starting to show it's age when playing some of the newer games at higher resolutions.
I've been holding out for another Matrox
product, but it's been a long wait for nothing.

We've heard, electic. One of our members already posted this in the "Guy on Anandtech Forum to be interviewing Matrox" thread. The general feeling is you won't get anything substantive from Matrox concerning their future plans. Wish you luck on getting some kind of direction from them.

Believe it or not, Matrox is approaching us for this interview. They want us to ask them questions. It may be true that we will hear the "no comment" phrase but we should try and ask.

So if you have questions, let us know either here or on our forums because I am sure my questions are not going to be as exciting as yours could be.

Ask them for a hard date on when their next card will come out that can keep up with a Geforce2 GTS.

          Seriously.

              - If Matrox stopped retail sale of their graphics card products (not including hybrid products like the Marvel and RT2000 line), would it signifigantly impact their financials?

              - Why is it so difficult to find PCI G200 cards? Will there be PCI G400 cards for retail sale?

              - I've had my G400 MAX since September 2, 1999. It has remained in active use as my primary display for my work-oriented machine since it was installed. When will I be able to replace that card with a next generation part from Matrox?

              - Will the secondary display on the G400 series ever be able to do hardware overlay or DVD playback in a window a la the primary display? Will any of its successors in the near future?

              - Will Matrox take pre-order requests for their next generation parts prior to release?

Why has Matrox ceased production of the G400?

..Or at least why has Matrox ceased to support the Rainbow Runner G series on its newer G series cards?!?!

Or at the very least why do newer G series cards not support G-Series add ons?!?!

                I could go on.....

What are Matrox plans to implement hardware T&L in the card soon to be released?

How are Matrox going to better current state of their excellent 2D quality nas speed, is there something new to be expected?

                    Hi electic,
                    I've some questions for you:
                    1) is Matrox considering to implement the 48 bit rendering in their future products ?
                    2) what does Matrox think about hardware acceleration of the Voxel rendering technique ?
                    3) considering that Matrox is in strict relationship with Amiga guys, would it be possible to develop a product which is both DirectX compliant and featuring, at the same time, the new Amiga 3D architecture ? If so, is to be expected a tradeoff between compatibility and performance ?
                    4) Can we expect in the near future a new family of 3d graphic cards implementing raytracing algorithms ?

I would be just happy if they mentioned something about them working on new video card instead of the deafening silenic that they have had since the G450 came out. I would be happy for him to say...we are working on a next generation card and everything is progressing well and it will be worth the wait! I wouldn't mind waiting till the fall if they came out with a card based off FCRAM and other neat features that other cards don't have. Keep the cost about $300 for the MAX or what ever the high line verison is and I'll be happy and wipping out the Credit card to order it from Matrox .

                        Yeah, I have some questions..

-Why all of the insane secrecy about the 'next gen' Matrox card? There are so many rumors flying around the net, and people who were once loyal Matrox users are giving up waiting and going with other cards because they are just being told to 'wait a little longer', and have been for a year (and that G450 was just an insult really).

-Can they at least confirm that they are working on a card that isn't going to be another dissapointment like the G450?

-Is Matrox R&D still hurting from some of their design staff leaving?

-Is Matrox leaving the gaming market behind, and just focusing on the buisness segment (with cards having basic 3D features for light gaming)?

-Can you tell us some info about what cards will be released this year (hey, I had to ask)?

-will there be a card released at all, or do they recommend buying a cheap card as a bridge between g400 and the next matrox card (g8000maxxx3)?
-what do they prefer, T&L or tile based rendering, or both put together?
-what exactly is the render subjects nude feature everyone is talking about?
-what price range will possible next gen matrox products be in? kyro II, geforce II of geforce III? or will there be several cards, maybe with multi-chip support?
-will there be any new revolutionary features, i.e. displacement mapping?
                          -SPECS????

Not this would ever happen, but...

The first question you should ask him is, " When will the next Matrox card be released that can compete directly with a Geforce2 GTS card."

When he says "No comment" or something like that, end the interview.

Why give exposure if he has nothing worthwhile to say?

                              Chuck

P.S. I know that no one would ever do this, as not only is it impolite, but also unprofessional. But, wouldn't it be nice to make them wait for a change?

                              EDIT: Changed interesting to worthwhile.
