The competition is ATI, NVIDIA, ST and so on. Matrox competition is absolutely not from 3Dlabs.

Competition view on Matrox

Hello Oric,
Maybe you are right. Personally I cant see Matrox coming out with a Geforce 3 Killer in the near future. At the same time I cant see them abandoning the games market. Most people would be happy to have a games card that is placed in the mid range bracket. For the time being Geforce 2 Ultras/Geforce 3 are top of the range and it would be silly for Matrox to try and compete in this arena. After all it must account for less than 1% of the retail market, not exactly big times sales
However I am curious how your contact *knew* this info. Its seems contrary to what several over sites seem to be saying.
i.e. nothing in the short term but something on the horizon. I also believe that if Matrox considered leaving the games market then they have probably changed their minds.
As an aside did anyone catch the article by Matrox at (i believe) the GDC last month.

I went to GDC and a talk on displacement mapping presented by Matrox.
Is this what you are referring to by “catch the article by Matrox”?
There was no mention of new Matrox hardware in the talk.
I do not think Matrox has given up on the gamming community. As mentioned in other threads Matrox had a booth at GDC and met behind closed doors with some game developers.
I found it a bit amusing that during the question and answer period following Michael Abrashes (Microsoft) talk on Xbox, a Matrox employee was asking for specific performance details and specifications of the nVidia GPU.
One other thing I noted was that during the Matrox presented talk on displacement mapping they used nVidia hardware for their demo.

Seriously, I thing Matrox has left the gamers marked for the time being and shifted the focus to technology develpoment. If you look through their web site, matrox chipsets keep on working in/for new products for quite a long time, the G200 in quad monitor display for example.
What I'm trying to say is that Matrox stopeed being part of the competition for a while and are currenty developing a technological base (new 3D,mulitimonitor and other fatures).
Unlike Bitboys, some of those new technologies are implemented almost immediately in the maket shares where competition is weak. The other technologies will bepropably licensed a-la bitboys to microsoft and the others till Matrox will feel they have a real edge over the competition on the gaming market.
So, don't wait for new gaming hardware from matrox in the next months, you can sure expect new innovative technologies (not necessary translated into new hardware) streaming out from matrox.
If you need to work, if you need 2D, go with Matrox. If all you want is to play, or it's the major use of your computer, go with ST/nVIDIA/ATi.
