  • G450, W2Kpro = Vertical Lines

Just installed a new AGP G450 DH w/32MB using the Matrox CD (dated August 2000). When I boot my system (Tyan S1590 MB, VIA MVP3AGP chipset, Intel 233MMX, 128MB, Promise 100Ultra card, 300W power supply) I get a blank dark screen during CMOS boot. When W2Kpro SP1 starts to load the screen is covered with vertical lines (2 colors alternating) and very poor (broken) text that barely readable at best.

I've been able to install the 5.51 Matrox drivers under W2K, but can't upgrade the card's BIOS as the card doesn't let me see to get into Safe Mode.

BTW, I had installed the VIA chipset driver 4.25a when installing the OS.

I've pulled all PCI cards out except the Promise card, no change. I've moved the Promise card away from the AGP port, no help.
I've moved PC100 memory stick, no difference.

I've got no ISA cards installed.

This system works fine with my old STB Lightspeed-128 PCI video card. Stable as a rock.

    Suggestions?

    First off, Welcome!

2nd. the via drivers you have are very old, go HERE to get the newest ones (4.29v) as the agp drivers could be goofing with it hence why the pci card works fine

edit: also, install them "normal" not "turbo"

      Jim:
Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the 4.25a driver just last month from either Tyan or VIAtech.com when I did a fresh W2K install.
Earlier today I visited the VIA site again and saw the new driver 4.29. I have downloaded it and installed same.

I haven't yet tried re-installing the G450. Please elaborate about "turbo" vs. "normal". I don't recall selecting a turbo option when installing the software from the G450 CD software.

      Regards, Dave
