• Card/Driver indentification in the Properties tab...

In the inf file for the G400 drivers there are strings that are

Str00 = "Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead MAX"
Str01 = "Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead"

I have a MAX and on the properties tab it shows "G400 Dualhead" as per the picture

I know this doesn't make any difference from a performance perspective but is there any way to get it to show the correct card?

[Edit] I really should proof read things before i click on submit [/Edit]

Well, your picture says Millennium G400 MAX AGP. If you're referring to the graphics chip, the chip is the same for both G400s, they just have different clock speeds.

Oh, you're talking about the properties page. Well, then I'm afraid I can't answer your question then. But, since it doesn't really affect anything, why bother?

Thx for responding LS.
I know it's not something that is important. It's just one of those insignificant things that gets to you, you know...

I was just wondering if it was at all possible, thats all.

I believe it has something to do with some bios-pin id.

the drivers read some number out of the bios and name the drivers after that or something..
i think that if you change one number in the bios pin file or something is will show as an 'real' g400 max.

i have the same thing with my max, but as there is no difference except for the name on the properties screen i didn't change it.

if believe this post has some info on the topic:

You have to change the :SubsystemVendorId from 0x2179102b to 0x217D102b in the video bios pins.

Check Hunsow's homepage to learn how to alter the pins.

Edit: Oh, and make sure you make a recovery disk with Matrox's recover utility.
If something goes wrong boot the disk, it's supposed to revert your pins to the factory settings.

Hello Delany
I had the same problem, i argued with big M folks HERE without any solution.
Like Michel said, this is bios pons problem.
i inspencted matrox drivers & bios,
Finally i managed 2 sort it out using Matrox's Progbios.exe

After making a rescue disk run this line from dos:
PROGBIOS -b SUBSYS_ID,2,125,33

U should than reinstall your drivers.

I have the same problem. I agree, it is anoying, but what's worse, is for 3dmark 2000 online result browser, I was near the top of the list thinking I had a pretty good comparable setup, then I realized that my MAX was grouped with G400 vanilla boards.

You know you guys are worrying about absolutely nothing. The drivers are exactly the same, there aren't different settings or anything.

Rags your absolutly right, there's no diffrent in preformance.
But most programs take the name of the card from the drivers, & it can B confusing.
4 instance - 3DMark categorized U on there site by this name.
I was the G400 record holder 4 some time because my MAX wasn't identified as 1.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I've been around these forums for about 3 or so years now (somewhere around there) and i do realise that it makes no difference what the properties title bar says. It was just one of those things.

Seeing that it involves a hell of a lot of stuffing around to change it i'm just going to leave it as it is.

Thanks anyway...

Hey Delany, I just remembered something. You could force Windows to install the "Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead MAX - English" drivers instead of the "Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead - English" drivers.

Uninstall your current drivers (from ADD/Remove or with the uninstall utility) so that you won't have mixed drivers, reboot and when Windows detects your card follow these steps:
Specify the location of the driver (Advanced)/Display list of the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want./Have Disk... (here you point it to the driver folder and click OK)/Show all devices and select "Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead MAX-English" and click OK.
It will bitch about the drivers not beeing specifically written for your device but it will install them if you confirm

If it still is one of those things give it a try
