The G550 core is based on the G400, and does not have hardware motion compensation DVD acceleration. It only has the same sub-pixel speedups that the G400 has (which you can utilize if you are using the cinemaster engine and DVD-Genie). That only results in a 2% cpu usage drop usually though.

AFAIK actually most hw solutions do use more steps (kind of higher "oversampling") for motion-compensation than the usual PC software DVD-players, resulting in smoother playback.
And if you live in PAL-land you'll have a problem with the G400/G450' playback of DVDs - and maybe the G455s, errm G550s (sorry to have stolen that, but it's so true) as well.

I just think it is very sad that the card will only be as fast as a MAX.

But hey maybe they will release a MAX version with 128bit DDR.

It wont be a Max you want, but a Fusion.

                    xortam - and others

You were refering to the "HTPC community", maybe you have had a look over at http://www.avsforum.com ?

I wonder what type of "DVD-output" you mean. The "HTPC community" in general is not that interested in the TV-out feature offered by some video cards, nore is there any real interest in HWMC or iDTC as far as DVD-decoding goes. (That might/might not change whit digital TV broadcasts.)
There is absolutely no question about the fact that WinDVD and/or PowerDVD produces a much better picture versus any other HW or SW decoders. It all depends on the surrounding equipments ability to really resolve the details and colours etc. provided!

I'm myself one of those using a LCD projector (Sony VPL VW10HT) for watching DVD's and beleive me, the image quality obtained when outputting DVD's in true progressive RGBHV format scaled to 1366x768 is WAY beyond what you will ever see from any interlaced S-video/RGB-scart output.

The G400 have been, and still is, a favorite for many people using hi-def RPTV's due to it's ability of custom resolutions and refresh rates. The Geforce1/2 produces a slightly sharper picture on certain types of displays such as CRT projectors. And yes, the Radeon has pushed the limit a little bit further by providing 10-bit DAC's etc. BUT, we are STILL talking about outputing DVD's through true progressive/non-interlaced RGBHV, scaled to whatever resolution your display supports. This has NOTHING to do with the TV-out feature/connection that your video card may be equipped with.
Please also remember that most of the Radeon users, if not all, do NOT use the HWMC or iDTC since it actaually DEGRADES the image quality when viewed on a large, high resolution capable display.

Not meaning to step on anyones toes, so my appologies if this is already known information.

                    thank you / Bond

Yes Bond, I've done some reading on the AV Science forums (not as much as I should). I'm not aware of the issue with the HW assist though. Is this with the Radeon only or also with the Rage cards? I've seen HDTV and progressive DVD at my friends house who has a few ways to deliver the image: HDTV via BUD with 4DTV and HDD-200 and HiPix card for OTA, progressive DVD via ATI Rage Fury to Barco 1208 on a 10 foot screen. He also has a line quadrupler (can't remember which one). For DVD, he uses, I believe PowerDVD, and certainly uses the iDCT circuitry of his Rage. He's using a P!!!/450 so he wants/needs the HW assist for smooth DVD playback. He just ordered a 1 GHz P!!! so it will be interesting to compare w/ and w/o iDCT. I posted before on this viewing ... "The FPTV (Barco 1208) displayed a very comparable image between an ATI Rage Fury delivered DVD and a 1080i BUD satellite delivered picture of the movie "Sphere": HDTV was just slightly better in facial textures and such."

It's impossible, cause it would require different chip-architecture and board. So it would be already a totally different card. What is theoretically possible, is card with bumped-up clock.

When Hein asked "Is the G550 also faster than the G400MAX,or is it just faster than the regular G400?
                            ", Haig replied:
                            "Hein - Regular G400."
This to me seems to imply that the G550 will be faster then a G400, but not faster then a G400Max. You guys can read whatever else you like into Haig's comment.

Come Monday or Tuesday some of us won't have to.

But if you ask is the G550 faster than the Max and I respond with Ack!, you'll get the drift

Actually, if you look at the post by Haig, it has been edited. I remember seeing Haig putting down "MAX" in the original post. Haig then apparently changed it to "G400" instead.
