  • BluesScreen on Win2k and WinXP with G400

    Hi
    I have a matrox G400 dualhead 32mb card

This is the situation: I get freezes all the time with bluescreen in WinXp and in Win2k, the information given in the bluescreen is that it happened something to a G400*.dll

the card works perfect in windows 98 but it locks the computer in win2k and winxp
I haven't clocked the card, I have tried the newest drivers in win2k and the default drivers in winxp

    my computer specs is:
    500MHz Athlon
    256mb Orginal PC133 SDRAM
    MSI motherboard
    SB Live soundcard

I am tired of having problems with my matrox card, if there aren't any fix for I'm going to buy myself a Geforce 2 card instead because the drivers are better for that card and it IS working in winxp and 2k

anyone have a good solution on this??

    Welcome on board, Svenneman.

And yes: I can confirm you observation. My card has been working perfectly with 98 but gives me now a bluescreen once in a week (but not more often !) with W2k.

The error message is always the same: a bluescreen saying that there is an error in a G400.dll. Afterwards I have to reset the system (hardware reset).

I am using PD version 5.52, the card is not o/c`ed and Win2k is a fresh installation with Intel .inf version 3.20.1008, no storage drivers installed, ACPI is acivated, PCI und AGP bus speeds are in spec.

Otherwise the system is rockstable and I can play all my DX and OpenGL games ...

Unfortunately I don`t know what the reason is and therefore I put my hope in the new driver release (version 5.71). But as the problem does not occur that often, I do not take swapping cards into consideration.

right now I'm considering in selling my G400 and never buy matrox again because of the problems I've had with this card, I will probably buy myself a geforce 2 card

        Try AGP 1x.
        Post the exact error message.

This looks pretty much the same as what I get. Unfortunately (or should I say luckily ) I cannot compare, as my computer is up and running fine the whole day.

But I am sure, that I have a "KMODE EXCEPTION" too and that this G400.dll is named too. Does the Matrox Tech Support know about that one already ? Haig maybe ?

hey MK what type of motherboard do you have?

I have a MSI-6167 and a friend of mine has a MSI-K7PRO and we experience the same problems

do you have a msi card too?

Both the 6167 and K7PRO use the AMD 750 chipset. I have installed a Marvel in a 6167 without problems in Win2k. In fact I can hardly remember the configuration of that machine as I've not heard from its owner in a long long time (over a year)

                        svenneman - look @ my signature ...

xortam - After reading the sources, I think that my initial suspicion about who the culprit is, is definately right (G400). But the cure is definately inaceptable / not helpful:

                        >> Disable the driver that is identified in the STOP error message or any newly installed drivers.
                        - or -
Verify that any new hardware or software is properly installed. Disconnect the new hardware or replace it to see if this resolves the issue.
                        - or -
If you have a video driver that was not supplied with the operating system, try switching to the standard VGA driver or a driver that is compatible with the operating system. <<

Nevertheless, I am going to keep my G400 !

My system is up and running 2 days now. Did a lot of work in Photoshop and Word, scanned some documents, surfed a little bit, used my mail prog and Winamp frequently and was playing around with Colin McRae Rally 2.0. No bluescreen so far.

Svenneman, maybe there is something wrong with your config or your motherboard ?
