I want to view a MPEG-1 movie by using the windows media player. When i hit alt-enter the screen of my TV stays black. There is no signal sent to my TV. The only way to get the movie on my screen is by sending it by the clone option.
Does this mean, that i always have to switch the connectors on the back of the G550 when i want to view a movie ?
No. Use a program that uses overlay when displaying the video.

yup, as Rags said, when you're outputting video to tv, DVD-MAX is the only way to go (compared to not using overlay + clone mode).

Clone mode copies the contents of the first output to the secondary output, except overlay video, to the tv-out in underscan mode (so that you can see everything on your tv within the visible area).

Overlay is a technique that allows the software to use advanced hardware capabilities of the video card in accelerating/stretching/etc. the video contents. It uses much less cpu time than non-overlay playback, and when scaled looks much better because of filtering and stuff. DVD-MAX is the dualhead mode meant for outputting overlay to the TV-Out (or even monitor if you're using one as secondary output device). It has nothing to do with 'DVD' other than that's the main use thus selling point for matrox .

If you're not being able to use overlay when playing back mpeg1 with wmp, then there's something blocking the use of overlay.

If you've pinpointed this not to being the directshow filter or free video memory/bandwidth, then it could also be the player itself as Rags said. Try a player which tries to force overlay in as many situations as possible like sasami2k, available at www.sasami2k.com . It's a bit buggy in some situations, but still far preferred over non-overlay playback.

Seriously, you want to sort this issue out of not being able to use overlay when outputting to tv. On top of that, DVD-MAX mode will output in overscan mode, which is a standard all official video material sticks to.
