  • G550 DVDmax overscan - Win9x 6.82 driver

Hi.. I've read alot in the forums about Overscan cropping an inch or 2 off the left and right edges of the tv output with DVDmax. I too am having this problem.

It seems Matrox tried to address this with the "TV Output - TV Adjustments" panel of the new 6.82 driver (98SE) or 5.82 (WinXP) but the adjustments made seem not to affect DVDmax.

Anyone else notice this or offer any advice about dealing with this annoying cropping... I am using a G550 with Composite cable, on a Sony 32" widescreen trinitron (Wega predecessor). The TV has no adjustments in this area.

I've been living with this on my G400max for over a year. Just when I thought the problem was solved on my nice new G550... its still there!!!

Failing any answers, anyone know how I can get a hotline to Matrox to get them to fix this? It's long overdue!

    Arrghhh!!!!

Overscan isn't a problem, all video material made for broadcasting on tele is made according to these specifications (you will never find key action or text falling inside the area that falls outside the visible tv screen, unless the people who authored the material made stupid mistakes.

By adding black borders to the signal, (to 'compensate' for overscan), you are losing image definition, as well as viewing the video material in unintended ways (unintended by the people who made it).

Bottom line: you can't disable overscan, nor shouldn't, for video playback purposes. And calling this a problem is 'funny' to say the least

If you really don't like it, then I'm sure you can add black borders in your TV's service menu (then you can also watch the material that falls outside the visible screen during aerial broadcasts, if that's your goal ). You can also use DivXG400, which is found on the matroxsite, and use it to add black borders, but I highly recommend against it (and that you should watch it as it was intended.. if the subtitles fall inside the overscan area, it shows that the people who subbed lack any intelligence at all, and you should just not watch it out of principle ).

I think it will be great if Matrox can support the Zoom & Calibration feature from Video Overlay Space to TV-out buffer.

If the scaling function in Matrox's current driver does support any point as the Origin, the addition work is only the GUI design and to calculate the actual Scaling factor from Video Overlay Space to TV-out buffer.

If the default scaling function is highly optimized for the current mode, it needs some more additional code for that. The performance hit will be also higher than the non-Zoom & non-Calibrated one.

I find it a bit weird that you ask Matrox to change their drivers, and add features that will make the cards output video disregarding the standards, just because you don't understand the nature of overscan on a TV.

Overscan is a integral part of TVs, and if you don't like it, don't display video onto a tv, but use a monitor or a beamer instead. But don't claim there is a problem that matrox needs to fix, when there isn't one (or ask for features which lack any logic in their need).

If you want to compensate for the overscan nevertheless, then use a utility like DivXG400.

        it's as simple as that
