Who will win the next round of graphics???
Well, this should be easy enough to work out. Assuming that the new Matrox card is positioned around where the G400MAX was when it was released:

        1) Matrox will have the best video quality.
        2) Matrox will have the best feature set.
        3) The Matrox card will most likely be fatster than any other card on the market.
        4) The Matrox card will have the best driver set.

Who will win? That's easy. NVidia. Having the best card doesn't mean you will "win" the next round of 3D. There's a lot more to winning the market share than just having the best hardware.

Many people people believe (myself included) that AMD make processors vastly superior to Intel's. They are faster, and much cheaper. So logically, they must hold the majority of the market, right? Not even close. 3DFX made some exceptional accellerators. They pretty much started the 3D hardware market. Where are they now? Dead. (Well, owned by NVidia if you want to get technical).

If the new Matrox card is even close to what we can expect of it, it will make a big splash in the market. No doubt we'll all buy them, and they'll probably win themselves some converts from the other camps. But market share just doesn't turn around that quickly. They will have to hold the lead for some time, if they want to be a serious threat to NVidia.

And (sadly), for some reason Matrox's rounds seem to take four times as long as anyone elses...........

Matrox's product cycle is longer because they don't just add another quadrant to their basic die, they rebuild them from the ground up.

IMHO to make a big gain on the other makers Matrox will have to do something they haven't done in years:

MARKET LIKE THEY KNOW WHAT IT MEANS!!

Unfortunately they have until now thought that their online store and the reseller market were enough.

This would be a very questionable strategy with Parhelia in the stable!!

It's time Matrox shook the markeing boys out of their stupor (or found some new ones with a clue) and re-joined to the brick & mortar market!!

          Dr. Mordrid

          PS: For those who don't know what the "brick and mortar" market is (ie: Matrox marketing ) it means;

          CompUSA & other computer outlets
          Circuit City
          Best Buy
          etc.
          etc.
          etc.

Amen Dr Mordrid. I think that was the real reason that most people still think that the TNT2U cards were the best of their generation. Not enough marketting or saturation in the aftermarket crowd to spread the gospel of M.

Probably not by very much because Nvidiots won't go down without a fight, even though it is a losing battle

The G400 is powering away in the server.

                    Matrox 21% after my vote
