While I trust Matrox to offer what I want, if 3DLabs started offering better - I'd sure as hell switch!
P.
I picked theMatrox name, because out of the options listed, it meant the most to me.
I take the MAtrox name to mean:
1)Stable drivers
2)The best Tech support
3)Image Quality
4)Longlivity
5)PowerDesk! (I love NaviDesk, and use it all the time)
The thing about stable drivers for me is that I dont realy care so much about gaining 0.5fps in Quake3 all that much. I care about the core driver working properly.
The Matrox drivers have ALWAYS been 100% stable in 2D work (not counting a little problem with SMD systems for a while). The DX part has always been quite good. The OpenGL part has been a little worse, but has always worked (at least for me).
My Radeon would sometime lock up in 2D, and was crap at scrolling some web pages. Dont know why. Never had the same problems with Matrox cards.
The DVD-Max! For a long time nobody have matched that feature. I cannot understand it! But from what I've heared ATI now have an corresponding and that was I meant to during the summer upgrade to an 8500 but now...
I must apologize to all matrox fans, But I just recently heard of parhelia... And this really solve my problem.
You see, I still use the G400 (since '99) but it's been quite a while since I could turn all details in games to max, I miss that.
But I've searched and watched and haven't yet found an replacement for my G400, It's so perfect. Sadly the 3D-performance is no longer enough. But indeed I'm very satisfied with the 2D quality and the DVD-playback, very very good stuff! That is why I haven't found an replacement. There are alot of faster 3D-cards but that's not the only thing that counts, but it does count though (for me atleast)
I hope the Pahrhelia won't be too expensive, Because I am an true matrox fan and luckily they seems to manage to save me from the ATI8500.
Thank You matrox!

I will bye the Parhelia primary because of the quality. My G400MAX has served me well since it came out three years ago, and I realy don't play so much games, but when I do, I like to have good quality at a good reulolution....
DVDMax is also a imortant feature! MAtrox TV-Out is the best i have ever seen
other was for:
-support (Haig, etc.)
-longlivety (my G200 is still doing just fine; and my mystique works with W2K, not bad for a 7 year old card !)
-reason enough to stay on the MURC (am I really the first to have thought of this ? )
Surround gaming seems fun, perhaps I'll give it a shot (depending on how it performs when using inferiour side-displays : mono 12" vga, or perhaps colour 14" svga)
Framerate in games should be "high enough". I don't care how it performs compared to others, just as the game(s) run smooth, in an adequate resolution, with a good number of detail turned on.

I think it is going to be interesting to see how well the drivers work. For my limited experience, their track record on newly designed hardware is rocky (remembering my G200 and G400).
I hope the long dev cycle is in part from driver design.

Food for thought...
- Remember when naps were a bad thing?
- Remember 3 is the magic number....
What I really want is a card that will do all the stuff my G400Max will do, but will still be able to play the latest Quake 5 or UT 2005 in 3 years time at a decent FPS and resolution.
So I guess my primary vote would be for framerates. Naturally, I wouldnt buy a card just for framerates, but the Parhelia is bound to come with all the usual Matrox attirbutes of excellent 2d quality, rock stable drivers and flexible powerdesk.
Athlon XP-64/3200, 1gb PC3200, 512mb Radeon X1950Pro AGP, Dell 2005fwp, Logitech G5, IBM model M.
Framerates: If the parhellia doesn't beat the geforce 4 into a bloody pulp when playing real games at high detail, something is seriously wrong
The Matrox name: Matrox cards are build from the ground up with quality in mind. From everything from the chip itself, the pcb it sits on, to the connectors, heatsinks and fans it uses, they are all of very high quality. Thats what the Matrox name means to me.
Image quality: Matrox cards have the best image quality around, bar none.

That reminds me, i hope the fan will be temp ajusted, so it dosen't make to much noice in ordinary 2D work.
Think i will ask Haig later..

I don't play games (at least that kind ), I don't render 3-D images, I don't need 3 screens so the only thing it would offer me over a Millennium is a big hole in my bank balance!
