    The color makes a difference?

      ya black is able to radiate heat better then other colours. so things that are dark coloured can radiate aswell as disapate heat into the air. (or surrounding medium)

      the only argument you will hear about this is that black things also absorb ratiaded heat better then other colours (like the road on a hot day) but because the GPU is heating the heatsink up, the heatsink will be hotter then the objects around it, therefore it will always radiate more heat away then what it absorbs.
      no harm, no foul.

        amazing the myths that never die. the color makes a difference of maybe 5% here, if you're lucky.

          everything emits light though, but since the inside of most computers are dark, it doesn't make much difference, but if by just having something black gives you an advantage over some other colour, i'll take it
          no harm, no foul.

            matt black dissipates heat better, gloss black is bad.
            also you have to factor in the insulating effect of the paint, the best is annodised black, because its very thin.

            It is also why most hot parts on Motor bikes are black, (well it used to be)

            Go to any electronics store and look at the heatsinks, 90% will be matt black (not the gimicky ones slapped on video cards and computers)

                  Could you explain your point regarding the colour!

                    Physics 101:

                    It's called the "black body" effect. Heat is absorbed, and re-radiated, more efficiently by a black object. This is why they paint auto radiators and transmission coolers black. This effect is only negated at very high temperatures.

                    Wilhelm Wien (U. of W¨¹rzburg) won the 1911 Nobel Prize for Physics for his 1893 theoretical paper on black body radiation and discription of what became known as "Wiens displacement law";

                    Lambda= C3/T

                    where

                    C3 = 2.898 x 10-3 mK
                    Lambda = wavelength in microns

                    Wein's displacement law tells us that as a body gets hotter the wavelength at which its maximum spectral exitance occurs gets smaller.

                      Thx Doc for posting that up.

                      Tho it sure sounded better when it read "Head is absorbed" hehe

                          This reminds me that I saw an amusing black T-shirt the other day that read "I'm only wearing this until they come out with a color darker than black."

                              Hah. Now THATS one scary movie!
                              Sam Neil is one of my favorite actors.

                              If into thrills, try "In the mouth of madness". Old classic - same actor.

                                Can't knock Sir Anthony Hopkins when playing someone in the throes of madness either. Sir Ian McKellen , Christopher Walken and James Woods aren't too shabby either.
