btw, does Win98 SE or Me allow you to save text files in Notepad with the Ctrl+S keyboard shortcut?

      quote from the ExtremTech Interview:

"ET: Will there be Linux drivers available when Parhelia ships? If so, for which distros? If not, are Linux drivers planned for later release, or will Matrox be making available sufficient information to allow open-source drivers to be written?

DW: The plan is to have Linux drivers available on our web site at the time that the Parhelia ships (right around the corner). These would be solid 2D multi-display drivers (up to TripleHead) that will work with any distribution that uses XFree86."

So if they make Linux drivers available for download, they might as well make Win98 drivers .... guess by then I will have XP anyway ...

LOL! Win2k was the first time I could dive in to HTML files quickly and easily once I put Notepad on the "SendTo" r-click menu...and then save them like this, with another finger on the F5 key for IE. Bog standard setup, and web-editing is (fairly) straightforward.

No longer a need for Editpad (except for its search and replace)

I think something worth mentioning is that *Microsoft* itself no longer supports win95; with support for Win98/98SE to follow shortly (June 30th actually; see "http://www.google.ca/search?q=cache:Sw9bWfKjEdAC:https://www.microsoft.com/windows/li...hl=en&ie=UTF-8"

Soooo... no more security updates, patches, service packs. I certainly wouldn't be happy to support anyone running Windows 95/98SE; why should Matrox?

Here is the actual link; the one above is google's cached version:
Experience the latest Microsoft Windows 11 features. Learn how our latest Windows OS gives you more ways to work, play, and create.

          NT4 is also chopped June 30; W2K march 2003; WinME December 2003.

Surely this gives a good reason for Matrox (or anyone) to drop the Win9X line.

Not that I see any harm in creating working drivers for Win9X; I just think they are valid in providing drivers for valid (heh) operating systems.

I really think Microsft should move to a Nvidia's 6 month cycle for it's OS...

With one generous full year support ....

              Adrian,

That still leaves support for Me, right?

I think(I m sure) that Me does support WDM driver and therefor should be able to use XP driver...

yeah, WinME (and Windows 98/SE too, iirc) supports WDM drivers...

granted, there are still a bunch of differences between drivers for Win98, WinME, Win2k and WinXP...

about Win3.11 support on the G400's... when the G400's were released, Windows 3.11 was still supported by Microsoft

this is a very big deal! think about it:

if MS doesn't stop supporting old OS, that means software developers will have to move on too because of lack of support. this could include new DirectX drivers and new hardware driver developers. so anybody still sticking to the older OS will eventually.

psh..next thing you know, they'll also stop broadcasting analog TV...

well, it's a good thing i already switched to w2k, which is not that bad actually. and who's talking about registry editing? after i installed w2k, i haven't touched the registry ever since. any programs running in the background, i just turn off the service. that simple..

You should read your links a bit more carefully:

Windows 98/98 SE (June 30, 2003) -- No-charge support for Windows 98 and Windows 98 SE will not be available after 6/30/03

That's it. Starting June 30 2002, Microsoft will stop selling Win98 licenses, that's all. Support will stay the same for another year still.

I still concur with the general vote--if somebody is prepared to buy a Parhelia, I don't really see why Win2k or WinXP is a problem. My bet is, the largest part of the target group (enthusiasts, semi-pro graphics people) already uses one of those OS.

                        ta,

Here's the final word from Haig:

Here's what our PR team just acknowledged:

Driver Support: As you would expect, Matrox has decided to release WinXP/2000 drivers upon the release and will be working on preparing other OS support such as ME & 98 for a month's time.

                            Thank you for correcting me....

I did a quick search for 'lifecycle' and 'windows' and I was sure that I had read that page before to read what I said....

I didn't mean to muddle the issue. I still read this to mean that there are no more updates to the software provided at the mentioned date. For example; when the end-date for Win95 rolled around; windows update stopped working (according to www.langa.com and other sources; I had ditched Win95 long before); the message you (supposedly) receive with Windows update via Win95:
                            -------
The Windows Update Web site no longer offers updates for your computer.... Windows Update supports the following Operating Systems:

                            Windows XP
                            Windows Millennium Edition (Windows Me)
                            Windows 2000
                            Windows 98
Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a
                            ------------

So I don't see why the Win98 date would act any differently. I may be wrong.
