nothing to to with the above but the following is part of the 'why the parhelia 'performs' less than other in some case':

another explanation could be, that they they got a good deal on 300mhz ram, but found out that the gpu was the bottleneck, because it couldnĀ“t clock very high. And rather than throwing all their good ram away, they decided to underclock it, since the difference between 16GB/s and 20GB/s yielded ZERO performance increase. This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.

Please note that in multi the Parhelia is way ahead at 3520 mtexels/s. Also note that it's vertex and pixel shaders and aniso 16 tap are far more advanced and the pipeline is much fatter.
Single texture fill rates aren't everything....not even close.

regarding that table, I would say that 800Mpixels/s is enough for single textured cases, I think i read somewhere that(in theory) 300MPixels/s should deliever about 60+fps in 1600*1200.
just try a g400max(300MPixels/s) in jedi knight(a single textured game, that is fillrate-limited, i think) in 1600*1200, IIRC i get around 70fps, I get about the same framerate with my kyro2(350MPixels/s).This sig is a shameless atempt to make my post look bigger.

Notagain, your Idea with the GPU/mem clock ratio wasn't so far fetched - of course there is an optimal ratio.
And I EXPECT to see a higher-clocked 256 MB Board - just like nVidia has a top-of-the-line board, Matrox will have one, too... can't see what's wrong with that.
Besides, who knows what RAM chips "normal" (i.e. the not-so-early boards) Parhelias will use?

I would say Matrox couldnt get the P to clock as fast as they wanted, so clocked the RAM down a bit to keep it balanced. A side effect of that will be more stability, les heat, and more overclocking for us.
I also agree that the core is the bit that will need to be overclocked the most.

at least the one matrox france showed 2 days ago.
anyway we shall start a countdown
we are at D -3
the other question is will ATI play bad boy and do the official announcement of the R250 or the R300 technologie just after , or before Matrox end of NDA.

the 20Gb/s figure was given in the "chip" press release but the numbers for the "card" are different. The Parhelia technology can have a bandwidth that high but the "Parhelia 128mb retail video card" will not don't mix the chipset specs with the card specs. I do however agree that the parhelia's weak spot is the core clock, 80 million transistors is HUGE!!! and depending on how good a yeild the chip you get is it might take some massive cooling to overclock this chip very far, it would really be cool if they could get it to .13 before the 256 meg card comes out but that is beyond wishful thinking-Chris K.

I'm going to jump in here, and say you have all missed the point.
Rated memory speed is NOT the only item that controls how fast memory access can happen.
Have you ever wondered why Matrox was lauching the 128MB version of the Parhelia first, not the 256MB high end version?
It's becuase the PCB is harder to design for the 256MB version. the 128MB PCB is complex enough, and Matrox may have found that eeking a few more 'pixels' out of the card would have required extensive and expensive PCB redesigning. They chose to ship with a slower clock speed that garunteed stbility *and* would pass FCC testing for approval.
I am more than confident that we will see a higher clocked 128MB version at the same time we see a 256MB version, and that the PCB will be visibly different than the one seen now.
(And yes, nVidia did this too, deliberately, to prevent people overclocking the 4200. It's the PCB that prevents people overclocking that card heavily, not the ram or GPU. In a good system with shielding and clean power it'll overclock nicely, but in a marginal system it won't.)

The 128 meg and 256 meg will use the same PCB. It's already got the room on the back side of the PCB for the additional chips.Core2 Duo E7500 2.93, Asus P5Q Pro Turbo, 4gig 1066 DDR2, 1gig Asus ENGTS250, SB X-Fi Gamer ,WD Caviar Black 1tb, Plextor PX-880SA, Dual Samsung 2494s
