I was going to buy it, but I simply can't justify the best part of $1000AU for a video card that is as slow as the reviews are indicating.

I was going to justify the $400 if the Parhella was a fast, quality and future proof card. It seems at least 2 of those are wrong

I had hoped the Parhelia would be my way back to Matrox having deserted to a Kyro II when my G400 just wouldn't cut the mustard anymore.
Well, what a disappointment, on paper it looked like it would kick Nvidia arse at least until they release their next gen chip, and with Matrox quality aswell. That would have been worth having, but at twice the price and half the performance there is no way I'm getting a parhelia.
If it was eye candy all the way and still playable framerates as Haig hinted then it would still be in the running.
I've just bagged me a Geforce 4 Ti 4200, better than the parhelia and less than half the price.
The G400 and G200's will stay in the work machines but for my home machine I wil have to defect.
Come on Matrox, what are you playing at !?
      Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64MB,
      PIII800,

Well I've been thinking about it some more... I'm on the Fence right now and I'm still recovering from the shock/dissapointment of whats happened now. I'll see what happens over the next 2 weeks if I cancel my card...I'm very curious to see M reaction to whats going on. Makes you wonder how bad it is over there...seems like after the G400 everything has gone to shit and they can't fight their way out of a paperbag. The P has the specs to shine, but its falling on its face right now and that hurts.

          Actually, I haven't preordered and won't.

I will, however, order it when it ships.

Why? Because this is the card I've always wanted.
How so? If you have been a Matrox User who wanted all of your currentfeatures (dual-head, etc), but with more functional 3D support, then Parhelia fits the bill.

I do a lot of things with my computer, and my Matrox G550, G200, G400 have been excellent workers. In their days, the 400 and 200 were decent 3D cards, but the G550's I've been buying have not.

Now I get a card that plays all the games I play at high res, etc., and will even improve on my productivity to boot.
          System: P4 2.4, 512k 533FSB, Giga-Byte GA-8PE667 Ultra, 1024MB Corsair XMS PC333, Maxtor D740x 60GB, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, PCPower&Cooling Silencer 400.

Capture Drives (for now): IBM 36LZX 9.1, Quantum Atlas 10KII 9.1 on Adaptec 29160

I'm not canceling since I never placed an order. I've been in the wait and see camp. What I've been reading so far is disappointing. I was hoping that Matrox would have put out a much more polished product than the impressions that I'm hearing. It seems like they had to hit this market window even though the drivers and testing weren't far enough along. The card is currently overpriced for what its offering. I wasn't that eager to purchase it right now anyway but this probably pushes its consideration out even further. ATI has reportedly vastly improved their drivers and their IQ is apparently quite good in many areas though not quite at the level of Matrox products. At this point I'll probably wait to see what the next ATI products look like and see how that compares to what Matrox has to offer at that time.

The performance was somewhat disappointing; I expected it to at least match the GF4 4600 if not beat it. I'm going to wait and see how future drivers turn out and see how it performs when it's overclocked. $400 is a lot for the performance the reviews are indicating. I would consider it if it was $300. I'm not in any rush to upgrade though; my Radeon 7500 is fine for my current needs.

I was going to buy one, but now I'm not sure. Certainly not with the price they're asking.

I guess I'll wait for the Parhelia MAX !

I would have ordered a P, but not now.

                  Instead I'm getting a GF4 Ti4400 tomorrow.

Ordered a MS-8871 Retail and also a Thermal Take power Booster GF4 Ti Copper cooler.

                  I did consider a Radeon 8500, but I couldn't find a 128 MB version here in Denmark.

I'm waffling and like many others a bit disappointed. Its a Canadian company but nationalism can only go so far.

I was in the same boat - I'd prefer to wait until the mainstream online stores stocked the card, by then reviews,re-reviews and the dust would've settled but after all I've read today the card will not last like my G400Max has. The .plan update from J.Carmack says it all - and the worst engine for my G400 was the Q3 one and I'm not prepared to go through another 2 years with sub-standard support and performace on the forthcoming Doom 3 engine. IF the expectation was that it was a good product for D3 then fine the purchase would have been an investment. However, JCs' update doesn't add ANY positive thing to say (no gigabit colour support, not using DM, speed and drivers are bad). Good god, how bad can one day end?
                              Cheers, Reckless

Yeah, why is JC so hard on DM? Maybe I was blinded, but DM was looking like a really great technology. He mentions that stencils can't be used on displacement mapped surfaces, but is there other ways of performing what depends on stencils without stencils?
