Did I see correctly?
It is compared to a Radeon 8500, yes, but an AIW Radeon.
Isn't the AIW underclocked with respect to the plain Radeon?
Just asking, not criticizing.
AIW Radeon 8500 = full speed CPU/MEM as Radeon 8500.
AIW Radeon 8500 DV = castrated CPU/MEM compared to Radeon 8500.
hmm i like that hand picked max idea too, surely if it lead to performance increases or was possible to clock "P" at 275 - 300mhz they would be showcasing such silicon already though?having said that anand said it runs cool so maybe it is capable of higher speeds
is a flower best picked in it's prime or greater withered away by time?

Kinda funny that most the sites posting reviews with the higher numbers didn't post the speeds the gpu/memory was clocked at. I think this is more important than it looks considering Firingsquad reported reviewing a board with a 325mhz memory clock instead of 275mhz.
Combine that with HardOCP's issues with Matrox about how only certain review sites were to get a board until they complained....
... It sounds like there is a possibility Matrox may be sending out tweaked boards. I've yet to see a single review independently confirm the memory speed.
I have a feeling that when the retail boards are out, all these sites posting the out-of-whack numbers are going to have a lot of egg on their faces.
no i think you will find that the sites are merely quoting the origional figures that matrox released when they announced the chip spec which gave mamory bandwidth of around 20gig/sec. if matrox had higher clocked boards they would be retailing them.
