  • Long and opinionated

Hey everyone. I have checked out every review of the Parhelia as to get a well rounded scoop on what the overall opinion is. I am very dissapointed in the exagerated fps score debates that are going on. John Carmack in my opinion has done a great disservice to the whole industry by shamlessly promoting doom3, a game that will run poorly on all current cards and won't be out for over 1/2 a year! I remember the days when programers pushed the limits of the hardware they had. I look at how far games had progressed for the origional Playstation. What a leap, and did they change the hardware? NO! Are Carmack and the likes just lazy or are they employeed by Nvidia to promote their 6 month product cycle? Telling everyone that you have a new game comming out and to play it well, you need a card that isn't even out yet is crazy. A game is so much more than graphics. If it wasn't Sony would be on Playstation 6 and M$ would be announcing X-BOX 2 for X-mas. But they don't because people wouldn't stand for it. Why are computer users so DUMB! Are we just sheep with the lowest levels of self esteem on the planet?

When I compare the P to a GF4-4600 I notice that the P outperforms the GF-4 when IQ is maxed. The P has more features yet they cost about the same. True when you take the IQ down the GF-4 jumps way up in fps but this is 2002 guys, why do I want to look at essentialy geforce 1 visuals at 300fps? Also when you consider that because of new drivers and partial DX9 support the P will continue to distance itself from a GF-4 or 8500. I would say the Radeon 8500 series has had a jump of about 30% from its initial release because of driver optimization. It will take Matrox some time to fully exploit hardware that is so complex.

Game companies should be designing games around the GF-3 level spec or they are just not producing games that will be enjoyed by the masses. This is what the X-Box is at and I suspect that most companies will create one game then optimze for both. You can get R300 or NV30 and play games designed for a GF-3 really, really fast and show all your friends your benchmark scores, but thats it. One should ask himself this: Are you buying a new graphics card because (a.) the programs you run now just are not up to speed. or (b.)you hope to play games that are not yet available in hopes they have good gameplay because they will have great graphics. If (b) you have too much money and a lack of a life.
I see the future of gaming. It will be at 800x600x3 screens with IQ on max with very smooth frame rates. It will also excel at all non gaming tasks because after all it is attached to a computer ;>)

    First off,
    Welcome to the MUrc!

The main problem up to now is that very few cards could run all games and such at high rez let alone with all the eye candy on, with this new generation, there will be more emphasis on "All around video value"
I'm with the ugly guy below me

(It's amazing how many threads I kill with that line )

Hey thanks, although I've been a MURC visitor/contributor for years but I'm at work (hey its a computer book store so thats ok right?) and my email has changed so I'm new again!
I was just over at the hard ocp forums to see what the wildlife had to say. Brutal. Very uninformed and judgemental. They are all about big numbers and little else.
www.extreemtech.com has a very good review going.

ps- My posts are reflective so you are actually seeing yourself ;^)
