Hmm, one might be inclined to think you are an overbearing pompus ass with a major superiority complex. Stop trying to talk down to people, you're not impressing anyone.

As you don't have the hardware to see the issue first hand, you are in no position to say so definitavely if this issue is corrected with 16xFAA or not. Especially when you are not even sure what the actual problem is.

      Maybe.

Or perhaps I'm just over defensive after having battled all morning in an effort to get a few people educated.

Not that, that negates the fact that I am an ass.

Given the details he provided and the difference in AA schemes used by the GeForce 3 and 4 compared to the Voodoo 5 I'd say it's pretty much a given what he's seeing is texture shimmering.

If I'm wrong I'm not too big to apologize. Already done it once on this thread.

That and it's not like the Parhelia leaves him without options. It does have a 4X FSAA mode after all.

Well if it's that frustrating/difficult then stop doing it!

BTW you can't appoint yourself anything, it can only be handed down by the powers that be.

Yes, but ignorance is an icky evil thing. Getting attacked from all sides isn't too bad a thing, assuming you end up with a tangible result.

And I know at least one person came away from here more informed than he was yesterday. Makes it worthwhile.

Yeah if it applies to the subject matter... this time it does not.

But the shimmering isn't from textures, either ground or sky. it's from the stark edge between the sky and the ground, and the high contrast difference between the two. FAA should remove this shimmer.

I play flight sims and this is them most apperent "Shimmering" that I see.

Also, I was under the impression that multisampeling was still a full scene method. It does anti-allias the edges (as, Frankly, any AA method should. That is where the problem lies, anyway, right?) but it also effects any area of high contrast. it's just that the starkest areas of high contrast are the edges of polygons, as most textrues arent' of a high enough detail to be blured.

I refuse to back my statements up with citations, though, Ryu, 'Cause i don't have the time.

That's a possibility that's been mentioned, but it makes the assumption that the AA of the V5 is vastly superior to the AA of the GeForce line. That's just not the case.

Also, I was under the impression that multisampeling was still a full screen method. It does anti-allias the edges (as, Frankly, any AA method should. That is where the problem lies, anyway.) but it also blurs the whole image.
                  That is in part correct.

The reason for this is that in GeForce4 NVIDIA utilises Multisampling AA; although multisampling is a full screen FSAA technique it does not have any effects on textures, so although multiple subpixel samples are taken they will have no effect on the internals of a polygon since the texture sample is distributed across all the samples, the samples only display a difference at the polygon edges to give the anti aliasing effect. Its for this reason that the FSAA test application displays no differences with the pattern of the white spots.

The "blurring" people attribute is likely due to the fact that the texture sample is distrbuted across all the samples.

FAA finds the edges first, and only AA's them, so textures and other stuff should stay clean.
                  This is true.

I refuse to back my statements up, though, ryu, Cause i don't have the time. I also like being consice. it's a virtue.
One can be concise and support his argument at the same time.

How about "If I can't dazzle them with brilliance, I'll baffle them with non applicable BS" for a sig instead. That way you would remain consice and technically correct.

Ryn Conner, don't you work for The Tech Report?

If so can you not ask the person with the Parhelia to try out a flight sim using 16xFAA?
