  • Best G400 mods & fans

All this talk of modding the P makes me want to tinker with my old G400 until I get the new card.

I'm in need of a new fan, as the old one has gotten loud and will probably fail soon. So far I've only seen the Lasagna cooler to explicitly fit. What are the other options? I suppose I could give up a PCI slot to a large fan, but I really don't want to. I'd like to keep the fan quiet too.

Once I get that sorted, it'll be time to OC, just a bit. I've been playing games a little bit lately, which is much more than my previous never. Maybe I'll get ramsinks, not sure if its really worth it though. Opinions? Other suggestions?

Ram sinks are always a good idea, you`re going to need them for o`cing the card.

But you don`t need active cooling if your case is ventilated properly and if you use a proper heat sink with thermal paste. I used arctic silver ...

You can find pics of my modded G400 at http://www.soontm.com/news/page.php?p=5 And I attached a Screenshot of MGA Tweak running my card at 186/140 MHz mem/core with passive cooling !

I used an old 486 CPU fan on mine. The size was just right. I saw the other day that you can still get 486 CPU fans at Radio Shack. At least they were in the one I went to.

I had my G400 16mb SH running at 180/180 just by adding a fan to the default heatsink.

My G400 is limited to 148/198 MHz core/ram with active cooling. If I set the card any higher, I get artifacts after a few seconds. Obviously my rams are holding me back.

My case temp is usually around 22C, but my CPU will go as high as 60C (AMD Tbird) under load. The case never gets above 30C, and that's when my air conditioner is off, the sun is shining directly on the case, and the machine is pinged at 100%.

I just threw out a couple old heatsinks when I moved last month. I knew they'd be useful someday.

I should say that my card is a MAX, so its already got a fan on it. I've read that that MAX's fry without fans, even with good HS's.
